This is a must-see for anyone in the city. It provides the best view by far from both the parking lot and the rooftop, has many trails around it (even leading down to the city), and houses the tombs of the royal Savoy family and several important noble figures of Italy, including some kings. That's right, they're here, not in Rome!

We took a bus and the rack railway to Superga. It is a fabulous building, but looks to need a bit of maintenance. You have to have a guided tour of the Savoy tombs. Unforunately they only seem to be in Italian. We were given a brief summation in English, but the Italian tour was way too long, even for the Italian speakers with too much information. There is no way way out, you have to stay with the tour and it was very boring. The buildings great, the tour not so.

The view from the top is wonderful. While the Basilica has a lovely dome, altars and organ pipes, etc., it was the tombs of the Savoy family I had come to see. The little rack tramway goes every hour. The tour started at 4.15 (in Italian only) and went for 45 minutes, so I would not be able to get a tram back until 6.30 pm instead of the 5.30 one. Very grumpy! There is a very moving memorial at the back of the church to the entire Turin football team who went down in a plane crash in 1949.

We got the No.15 tram from the middle of the City to the base of the Hill the Basilica stands upon - simple treck and the end of the line for the No 15 is across the road from the small Railway station for the scenic railway which climbs the hill to the Basilica.

The train up is a twee old thing - word of warning though - it only goes up once an hour (On the hour) and we arrived at ten past so had a 50 min delay. Still there is a small cafe to rest in.

Nice trip up - takes between 15 and 20 mins.....

The Basilica is a 5 min walk up from the upper railway station. Re splendid in it's isolation the church is indeed imposing. One can go in for free and admire the interior - there is a small charge to walk up to the Cupola.

Behind the church down a pathway on the reverse side of the hill is a shrine to the footballers and crew who died in 1949 when the Torino AC team were returning from a game in Portugal. Their aircraft hit the hilltop in low cloud and fog - the clubs supporters maintain moving tributes at the shrine to this day.

The view across the City from the car park of the Basilica is impressive - although quite hazy on the day we visited.

All in all we were glad we made the trip up to the Basilica.

I prefer to drive to Superga via San Mauro Torinese.and Rivodora. Nice road. I arrived late in the afternoon and unfortunately the church was closed. The view over Turin was fantastic and breath taking. Walking around the main buildings you arrive at the Torino memorial. The place were the plane carrying the Torino football team crashed. And this is really impressive. After so many years, football fans from several clubs are visiting this place. Very impressive! Worth spending a bit of time here.
