Good place to stay

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 30, 2007
We stayed here in May 2007 and had stayed here before because it is so handy for the station. We had a lovely room with delicately painted murals on the walls and it was also very comfortable. Turin is a very interesting city. We have enjoyed our stays here.

This hotel is right across the street from Turin's main train station, so is very convenient if you are arriving with luggage. We never had any problems with the neighborhood which felt quite safe, even late at night. You are about 20 minutes walk from the very heart of the city, but you can also take a tram or bus and be there within 5 minutes. There is a stop right outside of the hotel. The service was great, the rooms on the 5th floor feature high beamed ceilings, nice size bathroom (shower only) and a lovely view over the city roofs. Pleasant blue colored wallpaper, comfortable beds, ok breakfast. Most importantly, Turin proved to be a great surprise. A beautiful baroque city-center, well-preserved palaces, wonderful to walk around. We'd go back in a heartbeat, and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Since we paid only 83 euros to stay here on a September Sunday, we weren't expecting what we got: a huge, quiet 5th-floor room with beamed, angled ceilings and a gorgeous modern bathroom. The Genova is a far cry from a U.S. Best Western: It's a 19th-century building, beautifully updated, with an appealing restaurant and an attentive and thoughtful staff. The location across from the train station is excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring Torino, site of the 2006 Winter Olympics. In short, we highly recommend both Hotel Genova and the city.

We stayed at the Hotel Genova for two separate nights at the beginning and end of a two week tour of Italy. We found the hotel staff very warm and welcoming, recognising us on our return. Our room was nicely decorated and spacious with an excellent bathroom. Housekeeping was excellent. Breakfast was good with excellent coffee. The hotel location was ideal, opposite Porta Nuova railway station in the city centre. We thought that the location near the station might be noisy due to trains and traffic but our inward facing room was quiet and we did not hear any trains. We booked in advance, were offered a good rate and thought the hotel excellent value and would recommend it. We will stay there again when next in Turin.

This hotel wasn't bad, but this is taking into account the fact that we were paying a special low-season rate: if we had been paying the full room rate of €260/night, the place would have been unacceptable. Perhaps nobody ever pays the full rate but, unless you are offered something lower, forget it. The accomodation wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't €260 a night standard! We encountered the following issues:

The air conditioning was simply a small unit which - when operating (see below) - was totally inadequate in cooling our fairly large room. It cooled an area of about 1 sqm around the unit, but nothing much more. I therefore slept badly every night of the stay due to the heat.

The air conditioning's failings were only compounded by the fact that the air conditioning system is not on and available all the time - it is turned off for extended periods during the day AND night, presumabely to save money (although in a hotel charging such rates this is entirely unacceptable)

The servicing of the room was ropey with inconsistent replenishment of room toiletries (which are usual 3* fare - tiny, tiny soaps and not much else - bring your own), and also inconsistent supply of towels - one day we had four bidet towels but no bath towels and another day we had no shower mat but extra hand towels.

The bathroom was tiny with no bath, only a shower with a grotty old spray-everywhere head and rickety shower door.

There was a large quantity of previous guests' hair on both the bedroom and bathroom floor, as well as unattractive dusty fluff gathering in the room corners.

On the positive side, the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet was much above average, the location was good, and the hotel was in good decorative order, and nothing was broken. The rooms were perfectly sound-proofed and the beds comfortable enough. In the room there was also a small television with no English channels, a minibar, telephone, internet access point and trouser press.

All in all, this hotel wasn't bad for the price we paid, but at anything above about €200 a night, I would seriously think twice about it. As Turin is a big business city, I rather got the feeling that quite a lot of the hotel's customers are business travellers whose companies are paying for them to stay there - thus the official prices which do not reflect the accomodation offered.
