“A little jewel among Italy's larger, busier lakes”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

Enjoy the quiet car free lanes in Orta San Giullo, the lake views, cruises and good food.

Bring some euro coins as Orta San Giullo is car free so you park just outside the top of the town (2 euro per hour up too max. 10 euro at which point you get parking through to midnight). Tip: ignore the first sign for traffic restrictions as that just applies to lorries and coaches. It would be a long walk for you from there. Drive on to the main car parks but go no further as it then is traffic free and you may get fined. The steps down to the town are fine for the able but buggies need some lifting. Don't do Saturday or Sunday after about 11am in July as the parking will be full. Better enjoy it during the week - the Italians know where's best for their day trips at the weekend and Orta is where they head from Milan. Orta gets quieter during the week.

The square is lovely, there are some nice places to eat, we recommend the restaurant done by the pier where the boats are. See separate review.

Have a good wander, take a boat trip to the island or to very, very quiet Pella.

Finally, Lake Orta is just under an hours drive to Ghiffa on the shore of Lake Maggiore so that's also fine for a visit too.

The setting of the island in the lake is lerfect. It's no wonder that couples get married at the churches at Sacre Monte or in Orta itself and have their photos taken in the town. The secret is out!

“Beautiful and calm”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

A gorgeous and quiet spot to spend a few days. We loved the fact that no cars are allowed, although, this does mean that you have to park up the hill a few minutes walk away. Cars are allowed for unloading of luggage and then must be parked in a public lot at the top of the road about 10 minutes walk away.
There is a Unesco Heritage site to explore on the life of St. Francis of Assisi as well as the lake and quaint shops. If you want to get in the car there are other towns in the vicinity...but once you get here you won't feel like leaving.

“Small but perfect !”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

Lake Orta is tiny compared to its more famous neighbours, but it is absolutely perfect. Quiet, tranquil and relaxing. Clear waters, little ferry boats whizzing back and fore to Isola San Marco and picture postcard Orta San Giulio. Bellissima !
