“Charming place”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We travelled to San Giulio, Lake Orta from Stresa by local bus. This was huge fun as it went up over the mountain, through small villages and on twisty mountain roads and through countryside and places that we would not otherwise have seen. The cost was 3€ each way! San Giulio itself was charming. Lunch was excellent and not expensive. There is a trip to a monastery from the lakeside which was easy and cheap by boat and the little island with its monastery was tranquil and interesting. There is also the Sacro Monte just ten minutes walk above San Giulio, which is a UNESCO site with lots so shrines and chapels built mainly in the 18th century to St Francis - it sounds dull but it is not. In fact, it was all so interesting we nearly missed the bus back!

“Beautiful town and people”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

What a hidden gem. Fantastic buildings, superb food in all of the restaurants. Locals very friendly and no night clubs. Did not go over to the island but sailed around it with its medieval buildings and monastery. Went for a wedding but would go back there again for a holiday.

“Small but beautifully formed”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Orta San Giulio is such a pretty little town, very old buildings, pretty church, delightful to stroll around. You can get a ferry across to the island or walk up to the Unesco site of Sacro Monte with all the little chapels containing wooden figures and frescoes dedicated to St Francis. Bit of a hike up to it but worth it.

“Taken back in time.”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

Lake Orta is medieval in many ways and has a spiritual feel to it. The historical centre, overlooking the lake, has numerous buildings with frescoes and wonderful architecture. As it is traffic free, it has a calm air and boats moored to take you to the monastery and island in the centre of the lake, known as the Island of Silence. There are good shops for food, clothes, and artisan crafts; visit before someone changes it into something it shouldn't become. A perfect reminder of Italian history of centuries past.
