“We'll be back!”
Reviewed May 24, 2014

Il Cucchiaia di Legno is on the outskirts of the old town of Orta San Giulio. It is only a 20-25 minute walk from Orta San Guilio via the short cut, 30-35 minutes walk via the road (albeit uphill on the way back!) and a couple of minutes away by car. (You probably could manage without a car but it wouldn't be easy especially walking home late at night and also you'd need one from a point of view of getting around and visiting the other lakes - we'd not driven in Europe before and it wasn't as bad as I'd thought!!). The hotel hadn't been open long when we stayed and have to say we were very impressed. Staff were absolutely lovely and very, very helpful. We had a deluxe room which had high ceilings, was spotlessly clean and very comfortable - very large bathroom and a great shower too. It had stairs to a little loft are with another double bed so could have slept 4. We had a good sized balcony which caught the sun in the afternoon, perfect for retiring to in the evenings with a bottle of wine which can be purchased from the hotel. Breakfast was good, a variety of cereals, cold meats, toast, cakes and pastries and we felt that the staff had gone out of their way to make our stay comfortable. There were tea and coffee making facilities in the room, as well as a minibar/fridge which was REALLY reasonable. There is also a coffee machine downstairs which is free at breakfast time and 50cents if you want something during the rest of the day. There is also a water machine downstairs - they gave us a jug when we arrived so as and when you want more water you just fill it up and pop it back in your fridge which was a nice touch. I've seen some mentions of the railway on TA, yes it is close but to be honest, the trains aren't that frequent and go past quite slowly - they mainly seemed to transport lorries - you don't really hear them much once the windows are shut. They didn't bother us and I live in the country so am not used to much noise. We will definitely go back.. Oh and one more thing. Have a meal at their restaurant next door which can be booked with reception although we booked before we went and I'm glad we did as it was full. Great set meal for around 25 euros, and try a bottle of the Barbera d'Asti there.

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe room with a balcony.

Located in a quiet village just 20min walk from Orta San Giulo centre (use the shortcut through the woods, else it will take you 35 min on a road with no sidewalk), we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cucchiaio di Legno.
The building is brand new, great design, large rooms (definitely noteworthy!).
Add to that a friendly and helpful staff and you can only have a great stay.
The restaurant is well worth a visit too, provided you plan ahead and book a table. We got served a delicious 7 or 8 course meal for a ridiculously cheap price... It went straight to our top 3 list of restaurant in Orta, along with l'Olina and La Locanda del Buon Riso (which you'll find in Orta's town centre)

This was a lovely hotel and a very good find! Booked as 'Agriturismo Il Gucchiaio di Legno' (the title Il Cucchiaio di Legno is now the restaurant) we paid 180 Euros for a lovely comfortable room for two nights with fab bathroom facilities. Yes a little ikea like in design but comfy, functional and clean and I don't blame them putting a bunk in every room - we just used them to put our suitcases on but would have been excellent for a younger group of friends to all share, or a family. The hotel was a little difficult to find and is really only suitable if you have a car to get in and out of Orta and the surrounding area - but then if you are exploring this area it is really not possible without a car anyway!! Rooms were clean, staff helpful, great breakfast (continental but with meats, cheeses, home made brioche and cakes) with their own fab jam and honey this place was a perfect base to explore. Great desk staff very helpful - loaned us a continental plug as we had packed the wrong one. The restaurant next door (as per this title) is excellent I will put on a separate review and anyone staying in the area really should give it a try - you will not be disappointed. Sad to leave and would definitely go again. My only slight negative comment was that for some reason the heating did not work on the second night. Thought it was perhaps just our room but our friends also commented theirs didn't work! Was not a problem as pinched extra duvet off the bunks! Didn't even comment on it when we left as to be fair everything else was excellent.

Room Tip: We were in 5 and 10 upstairs but think all the rooms are very similar from what I could see.

Il Cucchiaio isn't in - or even very close to - Orta San Giulio. It's a short drive or probably a good half hour walk from the old town. It's also a little hard to find at first. But it's a pretty good place to use as a base for a short stay in the area if you're OK with not being right in the town.

The place has been recently established and everything is still pretty new. That's good and bad, since it won't suit if you're looking for something quaint and charming. On the other hand everything works, the rooms are comfortable and air-conditioned, and the facilities are good. Everything was clean and in good condition; the bed was comfortable, although possibly a bit low for those who are less mobile. However, our room felt like we were staying in an IKEA showroom, which was a little off-putting at first. I think they could have done with a little more sensitivity in the decoration, and not simply gone to the local IKEA for everything. Some extra pillows for the bed would have been welcome, as would a chair to sit on in the room (there was none). There was, however a nice area outside the room in the garden with some furniture.

Breakfast is in an open area near the reception desk. It is very complete and you will be well provided for. There's also water always available (they even give you a bottle to take to refill as you like) during the day. The restaurant is next door (the picture on TA is actually of the restaurant, and not the accommodation, which are in two separate buildings). Go to the restaurant at least once, the dinner there is very very good and spectacularly good value. You will not be disappointed!

A word of caution for light sleepers, the property backs onto the local railway line, and trains do pass by, and also in the night. With the windows (double-glazed) closed you should not be bothered, but if you like to sleep with windows open, then you're going to hear the train.

The staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. They gave us some good tips on restaurants in town (but as noted, be sure to eat at least once at this place!). There's parking right at the front door. There's no distant views of the lake, but you're in a pleasant green area, surrounded by forest and walking paths.

A pleasant spot for a base to come back to every day.

Not easy to find and at first glance nothing special, but it gains at closer acquaintance. Recently established, modernised and very clean all over. Attractive rates, even in high season.

Got a family room with bunk bed and high ceiling. Simple but nice. Too much non-fantasy IKEA style. Small balcony with views to the small garden and the mountains across the lake (no lake view). The neighboring railway is cosy but may cause problems during the night as you will need door opened (a/c is only functioning in a very limited part of the room).

Self-service water for free and cheap tea/coffee available 24/7, sympathetic! Jessica a very friendly and informative host. The other staff also friendly but do not look very engaged. Dinner represents a roustic, rural cuisine, served in the cafeteria-like non-inspiring dining room. Simple and tasty food, with a small but decent and attractively priced wine selection. We did not try the restaurant as it is only open Wed-Sun but apparently the food is prepared by the same cook. Breakfast same style, fresh fruit and home baked cakes, croissants, jams etc. All tasty but why not freshly laid eggs and fresh, home baked bread? And why serving the same cakes as we got for dessert at yesterdays dinner? A little higher ambitions, more originality and variation would be welcomed, both for breakfast and dinner, as the place obviously has the potential. We are willing to pay a little more for that.

Around the agriturismo there are walking tracks to various villages at the lake and in the mountains above. It is rough terrain, only suited for real walking boots. For swimming in the lake we recommend the small public beach nearby (go for the sign “Orta Beach Club”) with free admittance, relaxed atmosphere and not very crowded (except in weekends). Also try the gelateria at the roundabout by Hotel Villa Crespi.

The town of Orta San Guilio is very attractive, pretty with a relaxed atmosphere and not too crowded. For splendid views check out the three monasteries/sanctuaries in the area: Monte Mesma to the southeast, Sacro Monte above Orta San Giulio and Madonna del Sasso on the Western shore. Enjoy your stay at Lago d’Orta, one of the most beautiful Italian lakes!

Although it's right across from the railway (about 50 meters or so), the rooms are well-insulated enough so that any trains passing through become just an afterthought. What I appreciated most was the modern-style interior decoration (Ikea!) which lent a feeling of clean and uncluttered space to this agriturismo. Excellent serve-your-own continental-style breakfast in a bright and cheerful room. Great staff that will help you with any info about the area. We were so pleased with our stay that we made a request to add on another day but unfortunately they were fully booked. I would highly recommend Il Cucchiaio di Legno to anyone looking for lodging in the area.
