“Our 3rd visit”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We visit this area in August each year and have always chosen Santa Caterina. We have positively reviewed this hotel previously and our views echo the previous reviewer from
Bedfordshire. Well located, fantastic breakfasts and a a snack bar available afternoon and evenings. Friendly staff and the garden room was quiet and peaceful.

In all, a good hotel which suits our needs.

We arrived early in the day for our booking of six nights and not surprisingly our room was not ready. However we were given cold drinks and invited to park in the underground car park to make unloading our luggage easier when our room was free as it was an extremely hot day. We were then told that in view of the length of our stay we could use the car par free of charge for the duration (saving 8 euros a day) a very nice gesture.
Our "superior room" was on the second floor spacious and very clean with a good sized well equipped bathroom, a small fridge, a small flat screen t.v. and a small balcony with a couple of chairs with a view of the lake in the distance. We found all of the staff to be very helpful and very willing to provide any information which was needed. The air conditioning was not operating for our first night and it really was needed because of the heat, a request at reception resulted in it being available throughout the rest of our stay.
The breakfasts are worthy of note. An enormous selection which could not fail to satisfy even the fussiest eater. Breads and rolls, meats, cheeses, eggs, cereals, fresh fruit and cakes. The selection changed each day which kept things interesting and there were plenty of hot and cold drinks available.
In the early evenings when returning before getting ready to go out to eat in town it was very welcome to have the "snack room" where hot and cold drinks and a selection of cakes were always available free of charge.
There are some good long walks available in the area around the hotel overlooking the lake, and on the one wet and stormy day we had we drove to Stresa on lake Maggiore where we took a boat to the Borromean Islands.
The town of Orta San Giulio is very pretty with a variety of things to see and do and plenty of restaurants and cafes serving food and drinks at reasonable prices. A trip to the island is a must and we enjoyed a very pleasant lunch lakeside in the only restaurant on the island. The town can be reached by a variety of paths from the hotel the length of the walk varies but all were perfectly manageable for us and added to the enjoyment of the trip into town. During the day the mini train runs and there is plenty of parking if a drive is the preferred option.
All in all, a very clean friendly and comfortable hotel at a very reasonable price. We felt staying there was well worth the walk into town and would thoroughly recommend it. We would not hesitate to stay again. The mosquitoes were very active during our stay in common with many lake and riverside locations so do take some strong insect repellant !

This is a strange little hotel, that would perhaps be best described as a B&B instead. We had a glitch with our reservation, but it was promptly resolved- even if we had a long scary moment thinking we were out of a room to sleep in for that night.
The rooms we got were extremely simple, but clean and well kept. There was a towel issue going on, but not in our floor. The decoration is best described as crazy. Somebody already uploaded a picture of the plastic chair/flower pot arrangement in each window so you can judge for yourself.
The area is not really pedestrian-friendly. You can walk to the center and the beach (we did), but it is not pleasurable.
The staff and signs would lead you to believe there is a restaurant at the hotel, but that's not true. The fact is that there is an associated restaurant by the lake, and the hotel staff will drive you there for free, in a very Italian, somewhat scary 5 minute ride. Said restaurant, BTW, is plenty good, with splendid service and good prices.
There is breakfast at the hotel, and it is incredibly good for this price level. Nice at any price point, i may add. The cold cuts were fantastic.
There is free WIFI that wasn't supposed to work in our rooms, but it did.
The staff we saw was comprised of very young girls- in their teens or very early twenties. So they were courteous, enthusiastic and overall very nice, if somewhat inexperienced. Which fits the prices of the hotel very nicely, since the rooms are VERY economical. In a nutshell, a good value, unpretentious hotel. It is quite possible that we will go back for a longer stay.

We stayed at Santa Catarina for 6 nights, and it was pleasant. The breakfast was higher than normal Italian standard, and there was a untouristic beach within 5 min walking.
The rooms were OK, even though we would have enjoyed the free wifi in our room.
The walk to the city was nice, event though the first 20 meters is sort of dangerous, since there's no pavement, and the cars drive very fast!
But all together it's a nice hotel with a payable price.

Room Tip: Try the rooms with garden - it's nice to sit there in the afternoon to relax!

This hotel is situated a kilometer away from the lake, so there are no good views.
It was really hot, so we had to take the car to go in to orta San Guilio.
The surroundings are poor, with no view to speak of.
our room was OK, but strangely furnished, with a chandelier hanging in the corner!
The staff gave us tiny hand towels and asked us to use them as bath towels! upon request, we got proper bath towels.
The staff switched off the a/c at night, with 33 deg C temp outside! When we queried this, they said they did this for everyone, and that the a/c was only put on between 2 and 5 pm and 9 pm and midnight. My sleep was gone at night!
However, they did stop doing this when I protested.
The owner was really friendly and apologised for the staff and gave us a bottle of wine for our inconvenience, which was very nice of her.
The breakfast buffet was fabulous!

Room Tip: ask for a room with a balcony!

This hotel is very handy to the train station for travellers arriving by train, although we had to walk along a narrow, winding and fairly busy road to reach the hotel.
Reception staff were very friendly, welcoming and good with suggestions for activities.
The hotel is some distance from the town but it is a pleasant walk for anyone who is reasonably able bodied.
Our room was at the back of the hotel and overlooking the small garden. With a small balcony catching the spring sunshine it was also very quiet.
The room and bathroom were functional and very clean. Our only complaint was that there was only one chair for a couple.
Free bottled water was available in the room and also free snacks, hot drink station and water were available on the the ground floor.
We really enjoyed the wonderful breakfast buffet which featured a wide range of foods including special dietary offerings

Room Tip: Ask fro room at back of hotel facing the garden
