On the return leg of an Italian vacation, we stayed at the Relais & Chateaux Hotel Villa Crespi on Lago di Orta and dined one evening in their 2 star restaurant. Although we were given a terrible table directly at the entrance, we saw that seating was very limited and that larger parties would be hard put to dine in the windowed 'terrace' area. The waiters were cheerful and efficient during our visit and made a special effort to explain the colorful and artistic array of 'greetings from the kitchen'. Plus, we were pleasantly surprised when our waiter recommended the little-known Prosecco-like 'Saten' from Franciacorta that we especially enjoy. We did, however, have to wait quite a while between courses and felt that other diners were receiving better treatment than our table. For a while, no one came to see if we required more water, wine, bread etc. As for our various courses, every one at the table was pleased with the interesting presentation of their dishes and for the most part, satisfied with their tastes. Some of us are not fans of raw or undercooked fish or meat and resorted to relinquishing lovely-looking morsels to the more adventurous in our group. Although we enjoyed our evening, we felt that for the rather steep price of our meals and wines the service could have been a bit more attentive.
