Time stands still in such an old church. Well worth a visit, Charlemagne was crowned in this church.

Loved the sandstone façade of this important Romanesque Basilica, one of the largest and most important in Northern Italy. Unfortunately, due to the passage of time, the sandstone is starting to show signs of decay but I suppose its more than 900 years old.

Unfortunately Mass was in progress when we visited but our visit was still well worthwhile.

In history this church was first mentioned in 642 A.D. and it was the Royal Chapel of the Lombard Kings until 1152. The Kings of Italy were crowned in this Basilica - most notable being Frederick Barbarossa in 1155.

This is the best historical architectural jewel In Pavia and is more visually impressive than The Duomo.

Having walked around the Pavia streets checking out church after church I would say that this is by far the most interesting. Having been disappointed by one after another the Romanesque carving and the chapel beneath the altar were attractive features of this interesting church. It is unfortunate that the sandstone has worn so badly on the west front but, if you are in Pavia, this is well worth an hour of your time.

I think this church astonished me, is so different from everything I've seen. For me was the best in Pavia, and there are other great places to visit in this city.
