“Great food.. management can polish up a little”
Reviewed August 12, 2014

We had dinner at Sarla while in Milan. To start with, service was a little slow - or there was some mix up with our order. But the food was simply delicious and made it worth the wait. We had ordered simple meal - butter chicken, Saag and Daal Tadka with a basket of bread. There was more than enough food for 3 of us and food was excellent.
we were serenaded by nostalgic indian music and loud bickering conversation between the owner and the waiter arguing over service and money. The latter of which subtracted from the experience.

“Expensive, average food !”
Reviewed July 10, 2014

We went for a Dinner for two. The food was average. Ordered - A bottle of water (750 ml), 5 Garlic Nan (Bread); Paneer Makkhanwala ( Cottage Cheese cubes in gravy) , Lentil soup/ Dal and a grilled dish- Overall damage -60 Euros !! The nan (bread) seemed not to be properly done. One set was completely fried and the other seemed to be burnt in places. This can be my bad luck as well. Also the Lentils had more turmeric (Haldi) and thus seemed to be bitter to me. This is why I call the food not really well done but then again these were small imperfections but then the price that I had to shell out for it just does not do justice.

Service / Ambience id doable. But I can only recommend if you are really tired of Italian on a long vacation and if you really want to shell out some good amount of money then you might like to come here to get a taste of something average indian food.

“Excellent Food with superb hospitality”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

We had dinner on the last night of our long trip to Italy. I wish we had discovered this place earlier. Authentic Indian food and tastes just like home food. The service was excellent. The owner was very chatty and friendly. I would close my eyes and go again.....do remember to use google map as it can be a little difficult to locate as it is tucked in a quaint street (galli).

“Big cheaters be very careful”
Reviewed May 17, 2014 via mobile

We went to the restaurant thinking of getting Indian hospitality but were grossly cheated. Were given water in open bottles so we presumed it was tap water and charged us 9 euros for the same. Not only that we were also charged another 7 euros for the papad which we thought was complimentary since we did not ask for it. When we complained we were told this is tax. I wonder how tax could be the first item in the Bill and be labeled as papad. This is daylight robbery. Since I was with kids and in a foreign country I did not make a scene but felt very frustrated. Big big cheaters. The food was decent though. If you are to go be very careful of the water and the papads and also ask if the tax is included. They are big liars.

Dear Sirs.

We are neither cheats nor liars. Its is customary in Italy to apply a Cover Charge which in our case is EUR.3 which includes Papad (forfait),Chutneys,Laundry of table cloths and Napkins and all Taxes and surcharges. This is applied in almost all Restaurants in Italy and is a mattter of no surprize.
In India, where you come from, the standard practise is to apply separate Taxes at the end of the Bill which sometimes are as high as 35 percent and are called by the names of Luxury Tax,State Tax,Service Tax,Sales Tax ,Excsie Taxe etc. Here in Italy in our Bill includes all taxes are also included. and not separately charged.

You did not pay for Eur 7 for Papads as explained this is false and misleadinhg intended to damage our reputation.

It is highly defamatory to say that you were given Tap water instead of Panna Mineral water the inventory and sale of which we conserve in our records and regularly buy from this famous Company against regular payment.Since for a Restaurant this is a criminal offence called frode alimentare we request you to furnish proof . before making such false accusations.

Also we are left wondering why you did not point out this presumed irregoilarity on the very spot while you were in the Restaurant ?

Your claim is false and your defamatory words are due to your lack of knowledge of the standard practices of Cover Charge prevalent all over Italy and not in India.
We have observed from the List of reviews that you have written there is no Restaurant t in Italy other than Sarla that you have reviewed and therefore you have not had the chance to notice this cover charge being applied.
The kind of language you have used speaks for itself and I will refrain from further comment.

“Two meals here - one average, one good”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

We had two meals here - one dinner and one lunch on consecutive days in January 2014. Restaurant Sarla is a purely Indian restaurant on Via Stampa about half a km from the Milan Duomo. The best way to get here is to get on Via Torino from the Duomo and after about half a km take a left and its less than 100 metres from there.

After a lot of Italian stuff we came to Sarla to try Indian food. We are vegetarians. They closed at 2 30 pm in the afternoon and we arrived at 3 pm so found it closed. In the evening we were on time and ordered a Navratan Kurma. The vegetable seemed a little bland. However the naan was very fresh. The meal was expensive since they levy a Euro 3 per person coperto (cover charge). So for two people its Euro 6 before you even order a meal. The cost came up to Euro 27 which I felt was expensive for how much we ate. Also the taste was average.

The next afternoon we came in for lunch and decided to have their fixed veg thali option. The thali was priced at Euro 14 per person but included starters, one naan, two vegetables, rice, dal, salad - much more than enough for any person. The subzi included was Alu and Palak Paneer and since I did not like Palak Paneer they were happy to make another subzi for us. We appreciated that. Overall the food was good this time round with only the samosa starter being slightly bland. For the lunch menu there is no coperto (cover charge)

Mr. Padam was there to serve us and he was courteous and helpful. The restaurant had fine ambiance and the kitchen was open which always adds comfort regarding quality. Overall I would recommend this restaurant if bored of Italian food on your trip to Milan.
