“Layers of history”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

This basilica is a great demonstration of the layers of history that have influenced Milan. The gold altar is incredible as is the pulpit and mosaic.

“Beautiful church, worth a visit”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Doesn't look too impressive from the outside, but inside has beautiful decoration and carvings and an interesting crypt. Was very quiet when we visited, which improved the atmosphere.

I can absolutely see why this is so highly rated. It is absolutely stunning, do not miss this! Take the time to walk around the yard and explore the indoor sections.

“Doesn't look like much from the outside”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

St. Ambrose was the 4th century Bishop and patron saint of Milan and thus of significance to Milan. The church is well worth the visit. His body is on display. His siblings were also declared saints and are buried in the Church as well.

“Lombard Roman Style”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

You need to see this ancient basilica as the monument it is, as well as the inspiration it has been for countless buildings across Europe from the Pyrenees to Germany and beyond. The altar is on full display with its Carolingian gold art work well lighted, and in the crypt the bodies of Bishop Ambrose and the two martyrs after which the temple was originally dedicated in 390 AD. It's the discovery of a link with the late Roman empire and its then capital city.
