Owner description: In 1801 Napoleon ordered the demolition of the fortifications for Milan's Castello Sforzesco. This left a large space for the piazza Sempione, now a suitable site for a monumental construction to serve as a triumphal entrance to the city. Begun in 1807 in honour of Napoleon, the arch was not finished until 1838 for the occasion of the coronation of Ferdinando I as King of Lombardy-Venetia. The work of neoclassical architect Luigi Cagnola, inspired by Settimo Severo's arch in Rome, the structure features three colossal Corinthian columns with an arch made of granite from Baveno and adorned with marble from Crevola di Ossola. It is surmounted by the famous 'sestiga della pace' -- the work of Abbondio Sangiorio -- and by four statues of victorious men on horseback.

It seems like a copy of the Arc de Triumph in Paris but is still worth a visit. The arch in itself is pretty with a huge ground in front and attached to a big park.

“Smaller than the one in Paris”
Reviewed May 16, 2014

Situated in Piazza Sempione, at the other end of the Park when coming from Sforza palace, it is remarkably quiet and serene. My husband was a bit disappointed by its size, as it seemed to be growing smaller the closer we got to it (the steps in Piazza Sempione go down toward the Arco)

“Every good city seems to have something similar to this. ”

Easy to find at the end or start whichever way you come of Parc Sempione which was the true highlight for us. Worth a visit and walk round.

“A good start before walking to the center of Milan”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Yes, you need to spend some time in front of this Arch. Its not as great as the similar one in Paris. From this place as well, the castle can be seen as well.
