“Hotel was dingy and room smelled of smoke. Should be a hotel of last resort”
Reviewed December 6, 2008

As other reviewers have pointed out, the Hotel Salus is located in a not-so-nice area of Milan. It is a little sketchy walking there from the terminal at night with one's luggage.

The service was so-so; there was one person attending at the hotel desk and that was the extent of the service.

The hotel itself was passable, but dingy. The room was not well-lit and the furniture was old. Our room smelled very strongly of stale smoke, which was only exacerbated when one awoke in the morning. If you are non-smokers, as we were, this is a serious issue.

We only booked a room at the Salus because every other hotel in Milan was filled up for fashion week. Fashion Week happens in Milan twice a year, so it is definitely something to plan for ahead of time.

  • Liked — It was the only hotel available in February during Milan Fashion Week
  • Disliked — Rooms smelled like smoke

This hotel was very basic but very clean and most of staff were friendly, a couple were a bit difficult because of language barrier but if you have a basic idea of Italian, will be ok. The breakfast was a bit basic, but nice. Usually a cake and some french toast with coffee and juice, and an occasional yogurt if you are lucky.
Was in a bit of a rough, rundown neighbourhood, but noone really bothered us. I travelled with a group of 4 other girls, and we found it to be ok. Most shops in area close early because it is residential, but if you get all your provisions in before 9 at night you'll be fine. No shops open on a Sunday though, so be aware of getting plenty bottled water in beforehand or you'll be a bit stuck, unless you find a bar of resturant who lets you take out!!
The area has a few local resturants which do pizza, pasta etc. There is a chinese, but they don't speak any english at all, so a lot of pointing needed to be done.
There is a frequent bus service which takes you to the underground, where you can access the rest of Milan quite easily.
The staff at the hotel were very helpful to us in regards to helping out with questions when asked.

We got to Milan train station at about 11:00PM and had to walk to the hotel. As 2 female backpackers, it was a scary experience walking in the middle of the night through a not so nice neighborhood. The hotel is near bus stations, but nowhere near any metro stations. The hotel itself was nice for the price. The breakfast was a packaged croissant, yogurt, and bad coffee.
