We used metro, tram and busses extensively during our visit to Milan. It is easy and cheap: €4,50 for 24hours or €8,25 for 48 hours from the time you validate the ticket. We downloaded the map of all lines from the atm website and had it as a pdf on our smart phone. It comes in a very high resolution so we could at any time zoom in and find the nearest bus / tram / metro when we wanted to go to a new place.

Every city should have a tram system, punctual, regular & so cheap, a pat on the back for making it so easy to get around

Milan's street railway service dates back to 1876. Since then, its yellow or green streetcars have been a very familiar sight all over the city, clanking their way through heavily congested roads and largely unaffected by vehicular traffic. Series 1500 streetcars date back to the 1920s and were modeled after the US-built Peter Witt cars (some of these Milan veterans have even been sold stateside and operate in US cities, e.g. San Francisco). Milan City Transit (ATM) has recently discontinued the streetcar city tour service, which is a real shame. Open-top double-decker buses that now run them are no match for the classy old trams. For a fixed price of 65 Euros you can however have lunch or dinner on a specially-fitted period car departing twice a day (Mondays excepted) from Piazza Castello and the city tour lasts 2 hours. Bookings can be made on the atm-mi.it website. In this dining-car configuration, max. capacity is 24 passengers.
