We arrived to the castle and then it was very hard to find where the museums are. There are signs outside but they are very confusing. When we finally found the ticket office we went told that some of the museums we wanted to see the most are closed for renovation.
The gardens around the castle are not well groomed. There are hardly any flowers and it kind of looks like a prison. Not your typical European castle.

Worth seeing from the outside, less so from the inside, unless musical instruments are your thing. One of the many unfinished sculptures by Michaelangelo is here.

We decided to visit the Castello area on a Sunday morning (close to lunch time). The Castello is ok, however the gardens at the back leading to the arc of peace are fantastic and worth going for a stroll (weather pending). There are also a number of shops just down from the Castello and many places to grab a bite to eat. An easy 5 minute metro ride from the Duomo, certainly recommend spending a nice afternoon exploring this area.

A short pleasant walk from the Duomo Piazza is the Castello Sforzesco, a very impressive and complete red brick castle. The castle was most interesting with information signs in English. The Museums were packed with exhibits on different themes with one reasonable entrance price for all. We also walked the Parco Sempione which used to be part of the castle grounds very pleasant and nice view of the Arco Della Pace.

The museums were free on the day we visited (perhaps because one of the main attractions - the art museum - was closed for renovation) though curiously we were asked repeatedly for our tickets in each museum of the castle! Admission prices are low anyway.

The ancient art section's worth a quick visit, with highlights being Leonardo's painted ceiling and Michelangelo's unfinished sculpture (Rondandini Pieta). There's a huge collection of musical instruments in that section - we didn't visit the furniture or prehistoric sections. But in many ways the biggest reason for visiting the castle is the building itself - courtyards, different styles of architecture and a large park at the back leading towards the Arch of Peace.

The castle's one of the most striking features of Milan, and it's worth an hour or two wandering through. Free entry to castle itself (small charge for museums). Worth a stroll through at least, but it won't keep you for a day.
