My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a three night stay in August 2007. The Gran Duca lived up to the rave reviews I had read on TripAdvisor. In fact, we requested Room 104, which had been recommended on this website. It was a lovely room on the second floor, which overlooked the front of the hotel. It had a window that opened out to a patio area with plants, which provided us a lovely view from the room.
The hotel’s location is perfect--an easy five minute walk to the nearest subway stop and ten minute stroll to the Duomo. The rooms are large, their beds comfortable, bathrooms clean and up-to-date. And, their breakfast had one of the wider offerings during our 18-day stay in Italy. If you ask, the waitress will even give you a bottle of water to take with you. The staff at Gran Duca were very helpful. Via email, I asked the hotel staff to make a reservation for us to see the Last Supper. Promptly, the staff responded to my request with our reservation. Note: Reservations are the only way you will be able to see The Last Supper, which is well worth the effort – a joy to behold. When we checked in, the hotel manager reminded us of our reservation and said he would be happy to print out the reservation, if we needed it.
The hotel staff allowed us to check in early (10:00 am), which enabled us to take a much needed nap after a 26 hour journey to Italy (counting lay-overs). This is one of many kindnesses the staff showed us during our stay. We truly felt welcome there and knew we could turn to them for guidance.
For our three night stay at the Gran Duca, we were quoted a room rate of E138 a night (8-Aug.-11 Aug.). By using our Touring Club Italiano Card (---), we received a 15% discount on the room rate, which reduced our rate to E118 a night. [If you are planning to drive in Italy, you may also want to visit the Club’s Milan retail office, which offers a wide array of maps of Italy, travel guides, etc. at a discounted rate to members.]
In short, our stay was delightful and we would highly recommend the Gran Duca di York to anyone who is planning a trip to Milan. You won’t be disappointed.
