“Friendly, well located, and quality hotel”
Reviewed July 10, 2014 via mobile

We had a triple room and it was very well spaced, the third bed being a sofa bed. There was a free nonalcoholic minibar and snacks on arrival. The breakfast was terrific, lots of pastries, fruit, hot drinks and juices, even eggs and bacon. The staff are friendly and I recieved several emails from the hotel prior to my stay to make sure they had organised my room to my needs. Our only complaint was that the air conditioning panel did not work, so we either had none or very cold. There was no offer to fix it or change our room. The windows could be opened and there was a ceiling fan, but it was too noisy at night to keep the windows open.

We had a very good experience with Hotel Berna. Check in was smooth and the receptionist/front desk staff greeted me by my last name every time I went down there. We got upgraded to stay at the newer building across the main hotel. It was spacious and very comfortable. In addition, all the drinks in the minibar inside the room were complimentary. WiFi was very strong and reliable too. On top of that, the price was very reasonable (103 Euros a night). I would definitely recommend this if you want to find a place that is close to the train station.

As the last leg of our 2 week Northern Italy trip, we stayed in Milan during Saldi's kick off. We stayed in this wonderful small hotel close to the Centrale station, and was surprised by the value we got. From the comfortable beds, properly controlled temperature and clean bathrooms, to the little things such as the water/coffee dispenser in the waiting area, candy in the front desk, and free nonalcoholic minibar refilled daily. The staff has been the most helpful during our 4 major city trip. Highly recommended for value and service.

This hotel is not going to blow you away, but for anyone who needs easy access to the airport, this is a great place to stay. The staff was very nice and helpful - they recommended multiple restaurants, explained the bus/metro system (and sold us tickets) and also gave us a complimentary upgrade to a superior room (across the street in their annex). The hotel also has a decent bar with a tv and apertivo (will touch on this later) and also has a good breakfast buffet (pretty rare for European hotels, they had eggs and bacon, albeit a little undercooked) with a lot of pastries and cereals.

The rooms are small which is pretty typical for Europe but it wasn't too bad. The bathroom was a decent size and the shower was actually bigger than I was expecting and had excellent water pressure, there was also a hair drier.

I really liked that they let you customize your room before your stay - pillow type, toilet paper type, how your mini fridge is stocked (complimentary sodas and waters) and even what temperature for when you arrive.

There were a lot of massage parlors (which is pretty common for Milan) around the hotel which was a little off putting but nothing they can do about that. Location is closer to centrale station (5 min walk) than the duomo and last supper but it's walkable if you're trying to explore Milan, otherwise the subway is very very easy and a short ride, only five stops. The hotel is on a fairly quiet street as well which was nice.

Great stay for the price, especially compared to other top rated places on tripadvisor. I would recommend staying here to anyone who needs to be close to the airport transportation.

One quick note on appertivo, for anyone who doesn't know, this is a typical Milanese tradition where the bars/restaurants will have a buffet I spread with some appetizers (small pizza slices, pasta, vegetables, chicken, other hand snacks) that is free as long as you buy a drink. Hotel Berna had a nice spread including some salads and prosciutto which was very nice. Travelers should take advantage of this in the 6pm-9pm time frame before heading to dinner (dinner is typically later, around 9 or 10).

Also, restaurants add a small fee on your bill called coperta which is a small fee (usually 3 or 4 euros per person) that covered bread, a welcome drink and sometimes a small dessert of some cookies. I was surprised to see it on my bill bc I didn't know what it was so just passing that along. Enjoy your trip!

Room Tip: Get a room on a higher floor to be sure it's quiet. The annex was fine and seems a little newer...

The staff were all very helpful. They all went out of their way to assist. I was very impressed by how much they really try to help you to navigate your way around the city and accomplish your aims on your trip. Much needed when you are not an Italian-speaker. Also the breakfast buffet is excellent

First of all the good points. The staff are very friendly and give excellent service. The breakfast is very comprehensive and should cater for all tastes and nationalities. We had a fridge with free soft drinks/water. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from Centrale Station and with easy access to the underground system. The bathroom/shower room, though small, was excellent with high quality fittings.
However, the Superior room, with two small single beds, that we had on the 5th floor was very small and the only storage space was a curtained-off area in a corner of the room. So we lived out of our suitcases for our 4 night stay.
Also, because the room faced the road, the noise from the delivery trucks and garbage collections early in the mornings was a nuisance.
As my title says this was a bit disappointing and I don' think that I would stay at this hotel if we visited Milan again.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the road and check the room size.

Customerrelationship, General Manager at Hotel Berna, responded to this review, July 12, 2014
Dear Woolas,

we appreciate your comment.

We apologise the size of your room didn’t meet your expectations and would like to say that they are generally similar to what you may find in other European cities.

We are not a chain hotel where rooms are all the same and if you would have only informed the reception we would have certainly done all our best to show you another solution.

We apologise for the noise caused by the garbage collection in the morning, which is clearly out of our control: in effect in all central areas of Milan, the public pick-up and cleaning service takes place between 6 and 7 a.m.

We are very glad to read that you consider our location and general services to be excellent, this means a lot to us.

Hope to have another occasion to welcome you back.

Best regards,

Carlo Fontana, GM & Staf
