“From delighted customer: Berna is a case study for great hotel management & operation!”
Reviewed December 26, 2011

Stayed in Milan for 2days mid December and had had to book a hotel next to the Central Station. Chose Berna after reading all the positive reviews and was not simply satisfied but overjoyed (like in a classic marketing case study from the service industry text book;-))
The check in took 2min, and I was given the room before 2pm, courtesy of the duty manager. Grazie no.1!
The room was light, spacious enough for 1 person, very clean & well maintained, with free soft drinks, water & biscuits plus a bathrobe & fluffy towels in the shower. Grazie no.2!
Free wi-fi, couple of pc.s in the lobby, helpful professional staff with wonderful sense of humor; check out in 2min. Grazie no.3!
No mess, no lengthy explanations/conversations, no confusion with reservation/luggage/payment/etc…. relieving feeling of this enterprice working as one team and like a clock. Grazie no4!

Location is perfect. Walking distance to: Central Station-5min, Via Spiga-15 min, Via Montapoleone-20min, Duomo-25min, La Scala-30min of pleasant walk. Alternatively CS metro station is just around the corner with 10 min connection to the center of Milan.
I am a regular visitor to Milan and stayed in different hotels, from luxurious to convenient. This hotel is absolute star at all sides: location, security, price/quality & especially service just excellent!
Bravo Sgnr. Fontana!

I only had a night in Milan & chose the hotel based on convenience & travelers' opinions. Very glad I did. Appreciated the personal touch in terms of the personalised home page to indicate my personal preferences for my rooming needs like pillow, room temperature & hot water flask, prior to my visit. Appreciated the unexpected room upgrade & simple yet pampering touches like candies & biscuits left in the room, & the complimentary items in the fridge. Appreciated the fact that I could walk everywhere & return to the comfort of my room safely. Breakfast may be simple, yet a good spread, with very chirpy wait staff who took the initiative to have conversations with all in the breakfast room. You can sense that they are genuine in wanting to know the guests. Very efficient check in & check out as well, with nice touches like a chocolate bar for the road. Even had another email after, thanking me for my stay. & all for a really good rate - way lower than the disappointing service I had for the exorbitant price paid for a chain hotel I stayed in in Rome subsequently.
Kudos to everyone at Hotel Berna :)

My wife and I stayed at the Berna Hotel in Milan for 2 nights as one of our stops in an 8 week holiday through Continental Europe, UK and Ireland. As we flew into Milan and got the Malpensa Express train from the airport into the centre of Milan and planned to depart Milan for Cinque Terre by train, we were looking for a hotel to stay somewhere close to Central Railway station. We chose the Berna Hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews given its great location relative to the train station and were so impressed with our stay there.

The Berna hotel is only a 5-10 min walk from the train station, so very easy to get to from the train station even with suitcases. From the outside it does not look anything overly special but inside it is a great place to stay and provided everything we needed and more.

Our room was good, clean – I think there were free (soft) drinks available within the mini bar in the room, free wifi, and if there are signal strength issues then there are also a few computers in the lobby for free access.

Breakfast was complimentary and delightful as was having a relaxing drink in the bar at the end of the evening, and the staff accommodating of every request. Location is good, we wanted to walk everywhere, so access to one of the main shopping streets was not that far away, although it is a bit of a longer walk over to the Duomo, and quite a long walk to visit the Sistene chapel.

There are a number of restaurants within 5-10 minute walk of the hotel so lots of options for people wanting to dine out.

Overall, we really liked this place, it was perfect for our needs and I would certainly go back and stay there again.

Picked on reviews alone and glad we did. Excellent personal service, great room, great location and the most wonderful buffet breakfast. Amos, a waiter of exception looked after our every need. Great communication and personalisation of everything made you feel you were their only guest
Just a negative. Some rooms had an electric jug/kettle and the facility to make a cup of tea after sightseeing all day. Unfortunately ours didn't which was something to do with the class of room. Wanted EUR 8 to have one supplied. Would be nice to have all rooms with that facility and it would nearly make the stay perfect. Lifts are very small, wouldn't want to be in a wheel chair.

Room Tip: Our room was close to the lift which was sometimes noisy, but we didn't live there all the time...

Confused? This CANNOT be the same hotel we stayed in. The other reviewers seem to have had a very different experience. Booked the hotel because of its rating on here, but the fiasco we experienced makes me doubt Tripadvisor and will hesitate to consider their reviews in future. The room was smelly, decor from forty years ago and the breakfast was a disgusting scrum to a buffet in a cramped space. The reason I would give it one star is its proximity to the train station. If in Milan again would not stay here. Finally, delayed writing this review (and would have not) as we were awaiting an item we had left behind to be posted on, initial emails promised they would forward on to address provided which we were grateful for, but what do ya know? Never arrived, and emails now go unanswered. That's it - you've been warned.

Customerrelationship, General Manager at Hotel Berna, responded to this review, December 23, 2011
Dear MayoFlan,

Thanks for reviewing Hotel Berna. Guests' feedback is how we learn and hopefully improve upon the quality of our services.

My name is Carlo Fontana and I’m the GM of the Hotel Berna. We are a small family owned hotel, rooms are all different and not standard like found in chain hotel (and also our decor and interiors).
This means that you have six different room types to choose from – from the Standard to Superior - and for a small supplement you can book the room which better meets your needs and willingness to pay. Our Reservation Staff is always on hand to help you finding the right solution.

Moreover, we apologise you were not satisfied with our breakfast that is considered to be one of our most appreciated services. We offer an array of food and beverage to our guests that come to us from all over the world and we are certainly aware that we cannot please everyone's taste, even if our buffet is controlled daily for variety, quality and freshness.

Concerning your last issue, we are really astonished to read your words, as we don’t have any file in our records with regard to any request for a missing item or not dispachted practise for sending it back.
We proud ourselves to be clear, honest and transparent in every customers relationship; since that, please contact directly the Front Desk Manager writing at paolo.cucchi@hotelberna.com in order to let us have more details on this issue and try to do our best to help you.

Best regards,

Carlo Fontana, GM & Staff
