Ibis Milano Ca Granda

Reviewed March 12, 2011

I stayed here in March 2011 with two business colleagues visiting from the UK - we were attending an international exhibition at the new Fiera.
Our main reason for hotel choice was budget - and budget it most certainly was - with advance booking, we paid around €40 each including breakfast!
Room itself was fairly basic and small, but spotlessly clean. Bathroom tiles just beginning to look a little tired; perhaps 10 years since last refurb, but perfectly acceptable.
Being a cold early March, overnight temperatures were hovering just above freezing, but the room was always very warm - actually, a little too warm for my preference - I turned off the heating in the room altogether and it was still too warm for me. Fortunately, the large windows open fully, and with the room being small, just 10 minutes fully open was enough to cool it completely.
Bed was excellent - clearly quite new, no sagging of any sort, very much on the firm side compared to most UK hotels - suited me fine, but may be a little firm for those who like a bit more give in their mattress!
Only other point of note was a personal bugbear of mine - shower pressure!
Nothing beats a good shower pressure when you are up at 6am in the morning - I was on the 4th floor (top floor for this hotel) and it was JUST adequate - certainly nowhere near a power shower. Perhaps it would be better on the lower floors.
Wifi in room is provided by Vodafone - be warned - not cheap!
€5 for 30 minutes, €7 for 1 hour and so on. Pretty standard for hotels at this low price point though.
As for eating - we only had breakfast, which was modest, but adequate for the business traveller - the usual continental fare. Fully automatic bean-to-cup coffee machines were a nice touch - though they constantly run out of either beans or milk, so calling on one of the staff was a regular occurrence!
We didn't eat in the evening in the hotel as the eating area is completely devoid of atmosphere - but if you just step outside, the adjoining Novotel (same group - Accor Hotels) has an excellent restaurant - we ate there twice and were very impressed with the service and the food. Any comparable budget hotel in the UK would be put to shame by the excellent menu on offer. It would be a nice touch if Ibis residents could get a small discount for eating at the Novotel Restaurant - but I guess budget means budget!
Back to the Ibis - we did taxis for the whole trip into central Milan which were very reasonable - the reception have a computerised booking system where you get a little printout with the name of the taxi that will collect you and its ETA. This was always very accurate, and on average, about 7 minutes to wait - not long at all.
Because these taxis picking up at the hotel are "called", they are a little more expensive - into Central Station, the cheapest we paid was €12 and the most expensive €15.
By contrast, joining the taxi rank outside Central Station and going to the Hotel varied between €8 and €11.
Once at Central Station, the 24-hour Metro ticket can't be beaten at €3 - puts London to shame!!
In summary, an excellent hotel for the money - At their standard room rate, there is probably plenty competition, but for advance bookings around €40 per night, undoubtedly one of the best value options for MIlan.

All in all, a goood option for staying in Milan. As expected with an Ibis, the room was clean and the rates were low. There were two issues we experienced; the first was that our room was on the road side of the hotel and next to the service elevator, making the room very noisy. Be sure to request a room on the parking side of the hotel, and away from the service elevator and you should be fine. The only other issue, was that we booked online and the deal included breakfast. But when we checked in that evening, we were told breakfast was not included (in fact the individual checking us in seemed to be bothered by anything we asked her). But luckily when we asked the new front desk person in the morning, they couldn't have been more helpful and straightened out the issue immediately, providing us breakfast vouchers.

I stayed in IBIS Milano Ca Granda for one night in the last week of November. After having a fair IBIS trip to Montpellier, I decided to stick on this chain for the comfort and cost effective services. I got a very good discounted online deal and visited the hotel. To my amazement, this IBIS was enhanced version of the the one I stayed in Montpellier. The bigger room, large size bathroom with a great bath tub, a place to keep your clothes and a nice queen size bed. Although this is located 30 minutes away from the main city centre yet it is worth staying for quiet and calm mood. Early in the morning, the self service breakfast was delicious with varieties of stuff to drool upon. The service was fair as I did not get the chance to explore more due to limited period of stay. I recommend this hotel for the one looking for peace and leisure at the same time.
