After living in Italy for 8 years I occasionally crave a bit of home. When I visit Milan I occasionally stop in to the California bakery to get a sandwhich or dessert. The location is very charming and warm with cakes piled high and cozy tables. However, the food leaves something to be desired. I had the chicken salad sanwhich on a bagel that was rather bland and more mayo than chicken. I also got a slice of cheesecake (7 EUR) and didn't eat it. The cake did not stick to the crust. The crust was not made with a graham cracker crust but was extremely bland (perhaps made from insipid lady fingers and enough butter that I couldn't break through it with my spoon). My friend got a sandwhich and a brownie (4.50)- where does a small brownie in a little plastic sack cost 4.50? only in Milan. I don't think I will be coming back.

I like this place, the atmosphere is cozy and above all food & drinks are fair enough to be in Milan, Italy. Of course they're not up to a real American style, but the guys have taken their chance! Anyway, strictly recommended!

If you like brunch in the american style, you cannot miss california bakery...
The place is very small and especially in winter time you have to reserve cause it is always full. In spring they put also some tables outside but again reservation is strictly recommended..
the interiors are very nice..new england style..tables are very small and very often you eat with your neighbours elbow to elbow..
Prices are quite high...but the american brunch experience is amazing..they bring coffee and orange juice to start...together with a delicious basket of toasted bread, jams and cream cheese..
For brunch you have delicious options: eggs (scrambled or omelette) with a salad and roasted potatoes, bagels with salmon and cream cheese, or a big burger with fries.
When I'm not very hungry I usually order the baby selection: pancakes and fruits..
One point to highlight are also the desserts... real american ones..
you can indugle with a strawberry cheesecake or the famous sponge coffee cake new york style with coffee glaze, or delicious muffins..
A perfect place for those who love american food and way of life...
