Grand Hotel et de Milan

Reviewed June 8, 2010

We picked a plush old world hotel for our first stop in Europe to recover from the long haul flights and have a great first taste of Europe. The Grand Hotel et de Milan was perfect. I did a lot of research online to make sure we had a great holiday and really got a hotel that reflected the cities we're visiting and got a great deal on their website which included breakfast and first class rail tickets to Lake Como. We had emails from the concierge before we left to ensure we would have everything we needed.

On arrival in Milan we took public transport into the city and rolled out of the subway and the hotel is literally 10 feet away. Within minutes we're in our lovely room overlooking via Manzoni. Next door is the Armani mothership, the golden triangle of shopping is steps away, the Galleria and La Scala a few hundred metres down the road. As much as we were tired from the trip, we were stoked to have such a lovely room so we hit the streets and were in the Gucci cafe in the Galleria having a heart-starter within 15 minutes.

The breakfast and breakfast room is lovely, staff were ever so helpful, our room large was quiet with opening doors onto the street with little juliet balconies, the bath and couch were put to good use for power naps, and we loved every minute of our stay. Yes the room we stayed in was pre-renovation, but coming from a young country we really valued the history and luxury of the hotel and its fittings. Quality and style last and the Grand Hotel et de Milan has both.

While we don't get to Europe often from Australia, and we have much of the continent yet to explore, we will stop off in Milan for a night on our next trip next year just to stay at the Hotel et de Milan. We also stayed at the Sacher in Vienna and the Stafford in London to give you an idea of the type of hotels we love.

We selected this hotel for it's location, and it did not disappoint in this regard. The rooms while not overly large in size are adequate, and the beds are acceptably comfortable (not plush). The included breakfast is very good and a worthwhile start to the day. We had drinks at the bar on several occasions, but did not dine at the restaurant (reported to be one of the better choices in the area).
The European style tub-shower is an annoyance, be forewarned, should you not be very sure-footed, (do not understand why they still employ this style shower-tub fixture).
And the 9 Euro a day charge for internet service should be eliminated.
There is a metro stop right nearby the hotel which is very convenient... as a matter of fact it is so close, even from the top floor you are ever so slightly able to hear and feels the trains coming and going (thankfully they do not run all night long).
Again, it is a very slight sound and rumbling... but should you be very light sleepers, you may be impacted.

Lucky enough to be staying in this centrally located hotel. Bed comfortable and room was quiet. Found BBC World Service Radio as one of the channels on the TV which was a nice bonus - you'll find a good selection of the usual international business channels as well.

The windows opened - but looked onto a building reconstruction, don't plan on having a quiet lie in - or check carefully when you book in. The builders seemed to start around 8:00am

A petty thing that peeved me was when I tried to use the aircon to bring the room temperature down (it had been locked up all day), I found that the aircon didn't work, and enquiring at the front desk was told that it was disabled - if I'm paying $$$ to stay here, I expect the aircon to work!

Breakfast was expensive, nice but I'd have been hard pressed to justify eating in house if the rate hadn't bundled breakfast.

Staff all very pleasant. All the decor in good order.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment on your recent stay.

Unfortunately our neighbours have been renovating for the last two months and because of their proximity to our hotel some noise has concerned a small number of the hotel rooms. The renovation, hence the possible noise is due to the end in the 3rd weeks of April. We apology for this inconvenience beyond our control. Had we known of this nuisance we would have moved you to another room in a different location of the hotel. Again please accept our sincerest apologies for this inconvenience.

Our heating/air conditioning system is being currently updated to provide both heating and air conditioning at the same time. Unfortunately this feature is not yet available in all hotel rooms and in the mid-season it may lack to satisfy all our guest needs.

Thank you again for your time and your kind comments about the staff and the décor of the hotel. Again with our reiterated apologies, we hope that you will not hold this past experience against us and that we will have again the pleasure of your return visit.

It was 2004 when I stayed in this hotel at first time and then I stay there everytime I travel to Milan. Kind staffs, elegant decor, cozy atmosphere, lovely restaurant (one of the best ristorante in Milan)... I like every feature of this hotel.
The location is very convenient for sightseeing, shopping, concert / opera, and gourmet activities. Especially recommendable for opera-lovers. You can stay in the room where Giuseppe Verdi lived and composed some masterpieces if you wish !

Stayed for several days in a frumpy room, which was nothing like the ones pictured on the hotel's webpage.
The main hall of the hotel has some ugly showcases from stores nearby and these sadly ruin the room.
10 euros for a mini bar coke, 27 for internet (24 hour period) and 47 euros daily to park the car. Canteen style furniture in the breakfast room where there is also a huge ugly refrigerator to admire. Breakfast buffet itself ok. Friendly staff and all looked very clean.
The hotel has huge potential if somebody with a bit of taste cleans it up (and that in Italy!!!).
In the lobby in a dark corner is a sculpture in celebration of the signing of the abolishment of slavery in 1888 in Brazil in that very hotel. They should be prouder of it and not try to hide it!!

Dear Guest,

While we appreciate and thank you for your kind comment on our staff and service, we are sorry to learn that we did not fully meet your expectations.

We have now restyled about 80% of our hotel accommodations and trust to complete all of them by mid 2010; to our regret, we feel that you might have been allocated a non restyled room on your past stay. May we respectfully suggest to request a restyled room when making the reservation and we will gladly comply with your request.

We will treasure all your other comments to ameliorate our hotel and thank you very much for your kind suggestions.

We hope that you will not hold this experience against us and that you will honor us again in the future with your visit.

Yours sincerely,

Moreno Pagetto
Executive Assistant Manager
