Experience of a life time even in off season. Real Italian buffet to choose from and the atmosphere in restaurants brilliant. Happy hour from 6 until 10 pm. @ Euro 9 a bargain with good quality Shiraz wines. Surroundings next to canals an experience specially the green grocer's market.

Navigli has been one of the hotspot of Milan informal, relaxed, night life, with many restaurants and places to listen to live music... and it still is. Go there!

Navigli is a great place to wonder around in the day, grab a great lunch at cheap prices and to look in a number of unique shops (10-15 we found). The places to explore line the canal areas and the streets which interlink them.

The evening is when the place comes to life. The happy hour concept is great, between circa 18:30 and 22:30 (some places much later like Stra Ripa, which says until 2pm but ended about 23:30 when we were there). Stra Ripa about 300 yards down from Viale Gorizia on Ripa di Porta Ticinese was one of the most friendly places, if you are new to this, try here first, lots of places sit, nice music and a good atmosphere. I can't be more specific as google street view didn't map it.

Happy hour, presents you with a food buffet if you pay for the first drink which is slightly more expensive than normal or costs more than a minimum amount. Typically you need to order a drink more than nine euro or pay at least nine euro to start with. Bars are really busy, especially those with the better quality of food, so you may struggle to get a seat later on. Everyone seems really friendly, the culture seems to be to have a plate of buffet, but not a replacement for a full meal. However we found that visiting two different bars with a plate in each we were happy not to eat elsewhere in the evening. As long as you don't take the mickey...

We found some of the best eats at Stra Ripa and Maharaja Indian Lounge Bar.

You'll find most of the shutters which are down during the day open up to reveal some great bar venues, they do tend to favour the younger <30 crowd, but generally are really friendly. Some basic Italian helps, but bar staff were all helpful, we even got free shots from one friendly bar owner who knew all the locals.

AGHart is quite a popular bar and has a small club downstairs open until 3pm, this is really when the area kicks out, then you have to travel to the main clubbing areas in Milan.

love the atmosphere in the spring and summer when it is packed with people strolling along the side of the canals, eating ice creams and watching the world go by. there are even some decent places to have all you can eat aperitivi. in the summer you will be outnumbered by the mosquitos but the bars have gallons of repellent if you really want to brave it.
