We just stayed at the Porta Garibaldi B & B for 5 nights just over Easter. It is a fantastic location and within a half hour walk to the Duomo, although other transportation is very convenient. The location is within a 5 minute walk to a tram line and within 10 minutes walk to the Garibaldi subway stop, as well as train station (Stazione Porta Garibaldi). You can take the train from here to Como (1.5 hours) for a day trip on Lake Como. We did, to Bellagio and I would recommend it! The location is very close to Corso Como, which is just down the street.
Although advertised as a B & B, it is very much like a private apartment. Alessandra, the owner, lives next door with her family. The studio apartment is on the top floor of a residential building. There appears to be a bit of renovation going on within the courtyard area, but we never heard anything and it was quiet at night. The apartment is well designed, with a nice kitchen and bathroom. The bed is extremely comfy, especially after walking around Milan all day long. There is ample storage in an extremely large wardrobe. As indicated in other reviews, Alessandra leaves food in the kitchen and you can cook and eat when you like. The fridge was always well stocked with eggs, bacon, yoghurt, milk. On top of that, she had these lovely baked goods put out! Yum! Wifi is available and free, just make sure you get the password.
There is a Carrefour Express (mini supermarket) just downstairs on the street, along with a multitude of restaurants and a really nice cafe/bakery just by the Porta Garibaldi. Milan's Chinatown is only a 5 minute walk away on Via Paolo Scarpi.
Alessandra was very responsive with enquiries. I thoroughly recommend this B and B and would stay again on my return to Milan. Really, why stay at a hotel when you can stay here?
