Lorenzo Bonoldi was a wonderful tour guide. He knows the history of the town and gives you a thorough tour with all the interesting facts about Mantua. He really loves this town and it shows when he takes you to all the interesting places. We really enjoyed his tour of the Palace. Wouldn't visit Mantua without doing the tour.

The tour was fantastic, and Lorenzo is the best tour guide we have ever had. We go to Europe often and I always hire locals. Lorenzo not only knows his subject, but presents it in the most fascinating way. He is not just telling you events in history but ties it together in a story. If you are going to Mantua, spend the day with Lorenzo. And if you are trying to decide if you should go to Mantua, it is a fantastic city, that is a little off the beaten path.

There is no better way to visit a beautiful city than hiring a local tour guide. Then when your guide is excellent you can be sure you're taking the best from everything you see. That's what we had on our tour: excellency! Lorenzo is a fine elegant man with a cunning sense of humor and can skilfully balance dates and historical facts with curiosities and a little bit of gossip. A walk downtown Mantua is enough to open up the secrets of the Gonzaga family and its legacy. Ask away and Lorenzo will surprise you with his answers and deep knowledge.

My husband and I have led tour groups throughout Italy for the past 20 years. Regulations require we hire local guides to accompany us and we had for many years used a beloved tour guide in Mantua who recently, to our great sadness, retired. We never thought we could find a guide with her same depth of knowledge and personal care for our clients -- until we were lucky enough to encounter Lorenzo Bonoldi. As his business card states, Lorenzo is an "Art Historian, Travelling Gentleman, and Dapper Tour Guide." He was wonderful with our clients (in this case a group of senior university students), knowledgeable but giving just the right amount of information to keep their interest. On the other hand, he was able to answer even the most obscure questions in detail. His pacing was comfortable, his manner was friendly and caring. His English was excellent. He used his obvious good reputation with the staff of the Ducal palace to change an appointment time in order to allow our students enough time for lunch. Altogether he was one of the best guides we have ever worked with -- and we pride ourselves on hiring only the best.

Our family of four--2 adults, 2 kids aged 11 and 13--recently toured Mantua with Lorenzo, and it was fantastic. Over 3+ hours, he taught and showed us about the fascinating and long-lived Gonzaga dynasty, walked us through Alberti's basilica and other monuments of Mantua. He had a wealth of knowledge at our finger tips, was flexible and accommodating, and made Mantua's history interesting to all ages. As a result, we all fell in love with Mantua and want to return for a longer visit. I would most definitely engage Lorenzo again.

We recently stayed in Mantua for three days and enjoyed a full day guided tour with Lorenzo. It is normally my duty to read up on the history and guide friends and family through the places and museums on our tips to Italy. It therefore came as a welcome change to hire Lorenzo and simply sit back and relax while he guided us through the vast spaces of the Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Te. As my travelling companion observed, it is somewhat difficult to appreciate the cultural legacy of Mantua as so much of the art collected by the Gonzagas was dispersed in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Lorenzo does such an excellent job of explaining the history of the Bonacolsi, the Gonzagas and Mantua itself that one can appreciate the richness of its past even in the absence of these treasures. His knowledge of both art and history are extensive and he is well organized and charming.

I have spent a fair amount of time touring family and friends around Italy since our arrival 2 years ago. But my face is always planted in a book or a map trying to navigate and educate. Thanks to Lorenzo, this tour was a stress-free experience and we learned so much. We saw so many "behind-the scenes" attractions that we would have overlooked without Lorenzo's expertise. He has a great, engaging personality and is an excellent story-teller. Highly recommend.

Lorenzo saw to every detail. He told us the times of the trains from Milan and back, met us at the rail station, and covered what we wanted to see and more in about 5 1/2 hours.
He had bought tickets in advance for the Teatro Academico Bibiena and the Palazzo Ducale (the Camera degli Sposi requires advance reservations). We learned more than one could read in a guide book at every location and Lorenzo brought the various one-time inhabitants of the Palazzo Ducale, the Palazzo Te, and various other buildings to life.

I am a professional tour planner that organizes tours throughout the world for art museum groups and alumni associations. I recently was tasked with the job of accompanying a group of alumni to Mantua. A colleague who specializes in Italian trips recommended Lorenzo to me. Lorenzo guided my group of 15 alumni, mostly PhD scientists. Of the thousands of guides with whom I’ve worked, Lorenzo is certainly in the top ten.  He has a profound knowledge of Italian art history and history in general, which he imparts in perfect English with a sense of charm and humor. Enjoy Mantua in Lorenzo’s great company! You won’t regret it.
