There were very few tourists when we visited, but Il Palazzo Ducale was a highlight of our trip. I wish we had allocated more time to our stay in Mantua, which we enjoyed much more than Verona. Not to be missed if you like frescoes.

Not to be missed this fantastic palace in the heart of Mantova. We had a guide and spent 2 hours in this special place. The guide was well worth it.

Due to the earthquake earlier this year too much of this palace was closed when we visited it. That's of course understandable, but we were not able to see the best parts of this huge palace. But we will come back!

The Palazzo Ducale is a spectacular palace for the Gonzagas, brigands who became Princes but in the end lost lots. There are some 100 rooms to visit, often with just a few fragments of frescos but with some very fine ceilings. The pictures commissioned by the renaissance dukes have been sold off and what remains are mostly minor Italian painters. But some very fine ceilings, and some really jolly pictures including a Virgin Mary about to go out in her red dress to a party. Very fine ball room. At the end there's a further exhibition of the Augsburg connection.
If you're an EU citizen over 65yrs and with a passport there is a concessionary entrance.

We visited the Palazzo Ducale in early September. Most of it was closed for repairs. Also, the other attractions around it are closed for repairs after the earthquake. Beautiful place to visit, but we have to wait a bit longer....
