“Museum di Palazzo Ducale closed for repairs”
Reviewed September 15, 2012

We visited the Palazzo Ducale in early September. Most of it was closed for repairs. Also, the other attractions around it are closed for repairs after the earthquake. Beautiful place to visit, but we have to wait a bit longer....

“Camera degli Sposi”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

The masterpieces of Mantegna are delightful. Look up to see the ceiling with putti and birds. It is a beautiful fresco of perspective. In the Camera degli Sposi you will see the famous family of Ludovico Gonzaga and his court. The colors and clarity in the frescoes remain brilliant.
This visit is worthwhile, and a chance to see fine art outside the large city centers.

“No Mantegnas!”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

As a previous reviewer stated, the earthquake damage means very little of the palace is open. We were especially looking forward to the Mantegna frescoes but they too are off-limits. Alberti's church in the main square is also filled with scaffold, presumably also to do with the earthquake. We still loved Mantua, but if the art is important then wait for a year or so!

“Earthquake Damage!”
Reviewed July 27, 2012

I had planned to visit Palazzo Ducale, but due to earthquake damage, there is currently very little to see. I was in Mantua, July 24, 2012 and stopped by Palazzo Ducale. The only areas currently opened are the apartments of Isabella D’este, including the Portico of the Cortile d'Onore, the Room of Leonbruno, the Grotto and Secret Gardens, for a reduced price of 3.50eu. The highlight: Chamber of the Wedded Couple by Mantegna is closed. Before departing for Mantua, I checked the museum’s web site and it gave a very accurate description of their current openings, so if you plan to visit, I would check the web site first. The ticket office remains open from 8:15am to 6:20pm with the last entrance at 6:30pm; the museum closes at 7:15pm. Palazzo Te now has all rooms currently open.

“Huge palazzo”
Reviewed May 15, 2012

This palazzo has more than 700 rooms - i think the tour around went through some 100 - with lots of paintings and figures.
You need to book in advance if the want to go there in high season, but at the time we went there - we were the only ones there!
