“A mixed package - some positives some negatives”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

Positives - lake side rooms - which only cost a little more than a roadside room - had a lovely balcony with amazing views over the lake and islands. The bedroom was a reasonable size and was well decorated and was always very clean The buffet breakfast had an excellent choice. The swimming pool was lovely after a hard mornings sightseeing! I booked privately via e-mail and corresonpdance was always promote and helpful. Some staff -notably the night porter/barman and breakfast staff were friendly

Negatives - the main negative was the attitude of the hotel owners - they gave the impression that we - the paying customer - were somewhat of a nusiance! They rarely spoke - i made small talk on the first day but gave up after that - or smiled. I reported a problem with my safe which was not resolved at any time during my 3 day stay and requests for infromation about the railway staff were meet with a shrug and a don't know. Finally when the owner seated me for breakfast on my final day i was placed inside behing a pillar while quests that came after me were taken out to the small outside area - having paid full price for a double room B & B I was more than entitled to a table for 2 in the outside area - I found this attitude very insulting.

The other main negative was the size of the bathroom which was tiny. I am not tall but found it hard to use the toilet comfortably as it was so close to the shower and it was impossible to put the shower mat down and then close the bathroom door.

The pool area was not very attractive - nothing had been done in terms of flowers etc and you had to walk across the car park to get to it. Again if you wanted a drink etc you had to go into the hotel yourself - if staff had come out every once in a while and offered refreshments I think they woud have improved their service and benefitted their sales also.

All in all i gave this hotel 3 stars as it is an adequate hotel for those on a limited budget. However due to the attitude of management - who should perhaps take lessons from there paid employees! - i would not be keen to stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Go for a lakeside room - the rooms on the other side of the hotel overlook a very busy room

A long walk to the shops and restaurants of Stresa but nice sized, very clean rooms and hotel. The bed was rock hard, and the manager was not helpful at all with train service and other Q we had. Too many other more convenient options IMO to stay here, especially with a stuffy manager offering no help what so ever

This holiday was booked 8 months prior to going with Crystal (found in Thomson's Lakes and Mountains brochure) holidays. As I live in the country in a very quiet location I am unused to having to deal with traffic noise when sleeping and therefore specifically requested a room on the top floor not overlooking a busy road. There were no rooms with a lake side view available when I booked the holiday. I then followed up the booking with an e-mail direct to the hotel reinforcing this request.

I was therefore extremely disappointed to be allocated a room on the first floor directly overlooking a busy main road and was told that as the hotel was full I would not be able to move to anything more suitable. Although I was told that the rooms were sound-proof this is certainly not the case and as there was traffic constantly throughout the night I had to deal with a week of very disruptive sleep. The noise from the traffic on the first floor was too bad for me to sit out comfortably on the little balcony.

The rooms were kept very clean and the standard of the food in the restaurant was very good. The hotel is close to a bus stop, 10 minutes walk from the station and a short walk to a ferry.

I would therefore suggest to anyone considering staying at the Hotel Flora that if you are unable to obtain a room with a lake view and have difficulty sleeping there is no guarantee (despite how hard you try) that you will be allocated a room not overlooking the busy road and it would be advisable to consider an alternative hotel.

Room Tip: As stated above - unless you are able to obtain a lake side view your requests for your specific nee...

We stayed at the Flora for a week with crystal holidays.
The food was amazing 4 courses in the evening and a continenal breakfast. The food was very tasty.
The staff were very helpful at all times if there was a problem with anything it was sorted
very quickly.
Although the hotel is on a very busy road yes you do get noise from the road but once the doors and windows are closed you dont hear the noise at all.
I would say the only thing with the Flora is that it is quite a long walk into the centre of Stresa
but if you enjoy a walk after dinner then it is about a half hour walk.
There are a lot of midges about at the moment along the lakeside so take plenty repellent.
All in all it is a great family run hotel.

Room Tip: If you do the trip to Switzerland take a picnic the prices to eat were so expensive.

A family run hotel at the budget end of the market, in Stresa. Although the hotel is on the busy main road into Stresa we didn't find noise a problem. It's a 20min stroll into town along very pretty paths at the side of the lake. Nearby is the cable car and the boats out to the delightful islands of Isola bella and Pescatori. We stayed in a room overlooking the side entrance. Bedroom was in need of refurbishing; cracked walls and very dated, faded paintwork. The balcony was just concrete although we noticed others were tiled. Worth noting that there was a wardrobe with a shelf but no drawers at all in the room so storage was an issue. Also toiletries weren't replaced or did not exist in the first place, and only one pillow each. All was resolved but only after repeat requests. Food was served in a friendly, bustly dining room in the basement; meals were varied and catered well for special dietary needs. If you are looking for a budget hotel then Hotel Flora is ok, otherwise stretch the funds and go for a higher quality hotel along the very pretty lakeside.

We stayed in the Hotel Flora for five nights from 13 September 2011. Upon our arrival, we were told they had no record of our being part of the Ramblers (UK walking) group checking in that day. After the person at the front desk consulted with the owner, we were given a room fronting a busy street with a balcony overlooking the pool.

Since it was unseasonably warm, we immediately turned on the air conditioning. As we soon discovered, having the air conditioner fan on was a good way to mask the road noise we were expecting after having read several trip advisor reviews. What we didn't anticipate was the air conditioning being shut off around midnight which resulted in the room being hot and stuffy by the early morning hours. Opening the window was out of the question because of the road noise, particularly early in the morning.

Before arriving we were advised the hotel did not take checks, credit cards or debit cards. (Could it be the hotel management is evading paying their Italian taxes?) O,K,, no problem, we will just withdraw some euros from an ATM machine. Unfortunately the machine spit out several 50 euro notes. The first evening we bought a bottle of wine to go with our meal. After dinner a lady came around to collect for the wine. When I inquired about putting it on a tab since we were going to be there five more nights, the answer was we don't do tabs. So I handed her one of my 50 euro notes. She claimed not to have change for a 50 euro note despite the fact that she had been collecting money from a number of other clients. Later she and I walked up to the front desk where the clerk on duty proceeded to give me a handful of small denomination coins (approximately 30 euros worth). Two nights later many of the coins were returned to her.

Other problems were the safe did not work. This was reported to the front desk. Nothing was ever done. There was a very dangerous step down in the bathroom and one day they forgot to replace our towels. The hotel was overbooked and some of our group were given rooms in another hotel. Our group leaders were also lodged several blocks away in an "annex" at the owners home. One evening one of our leaders expensive hiking boots were chewed on by the owners dog. The owner never acknowledged the dog's bad behavior.

Just to counterbalance the above negatives, the hotel was very clean. Eating dinner outside by the pool was a delight and the breakfast buffet was very nice.

Room Tip: If at all possible, get a room away from the road in front of the hotel.
