Stayed for 1 week in mid September in a lake view room on the 5th floor of the Speranza building. Half board. Fantastic view, well over the car park between the hotel and the ferry terminal/lake. Noise was not a problem. Since facing the lake, the balcony gets only early morning sun, and could get a little cool at times. Room was spacious and comfortable. Cleaned well daily when we were at breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. We enjoyed the food which was plentiful and tasty. The waiting staff were friendly and professional. We always ate in the area with the lake view at night, although sometimes at breakfast this was full and we had to eat in the inner dining area.
The hotel is very central and just beside the ferry terminal. Also handy for the central square with it's many restaurants and shops. The cafe under the hotel has free wi-fi for customers and the password was changed weekly. Works across the road and variably in the hotel lobby.

Room Tip: lake view from the 1st and 2nd floors might be partly obscured by trees.

We stayed in Milan au Lac for 2 very enjoyable weeks in August. We upgraded to a room with a lake view, which added to our enjoyment. We even painted the view! The dining room staff were wonderful, and a lovely mix, with Maya from Poland, Mifail and Artan from Macedonia, Claudio from Sicily, and Oksandra from the Ukraine, with the ever attentive Raffa, Augusto, Massimiliano, Barbara, Michele, Lello, and many others. The food was plentiful, and there was a good variety. If I have a little quibble, it is that the vegetables accompanying the 'secundi' were rather tired! Brassicas, in particular, would remind you of the 50s... Maya, with Claudio in tow, would tempt us all with the dessert trolley... Wicked! You better forget your diet! Breakfast was plentiful too, and every morning there was fresh fruit on offer. If you, like me, are an espresso fan, then the staff will be delighted to bring you a cup, rather than the (weaker) morning coffee routinely provided.
As far as the accommodation goes: the plumbing was working, but hot/cold could be temperamental, but nothing one could not come to grips with. The airconditioning was adequate to our requirements, apart from the day we changed rooms, when the airco had been turned off temporarily. The rooms were kept wonderfully clean.
Iria and her team at the desk (Daniele, Chiara and the others) were very efficient and courteous. We were delighted with the pool at the Regina Palace Hotel, only a short walk away. Spacious, wonderful pool, lovely towels, and Luca was an excellent and ever cheerful pool attendant.
Its central location made Milan Au Lac a good starting point for all sorts of outings, whether by boat (recommended!), bus (do go to Baveno and Lake Orta) or train (we visited Milan twice). Next-door to Speranza Au Lac is the travel agent Tomassucci Viaggi. The staff could not have been more helpful and we used them a number of times (train tickets and tickets for the Lake Maggiore Express can be purchased here, as well as various bus tours, such as the Zermatt/Matterhorn trip). The tourguide, Barbara is a fount of knowledge in a most unobtrusive way. She adds value to your excursions, no doubt about it! Luca, we will remember your kindness in driving us to the bus...
Stresa, because of its centrality, is an optimal departure point for memorable outings. I recommend a visit on the funivia to Mottarone, as well as the beautiful islands: Isola Bella, madly over the top, more intimate Isola Madre, and the family-friendly Isola Superiore. Villa Taranto, with its splendid gardens, is worth a visit, and Intra and Pallaza have its own charms. Do try the liquorice icecream on the Pallanza lake front! I hope to revisit this beautiful area again soon.

Room Tip: Originally we had not booked a lake view room, but given the wonderful view of the lake, we felt tha...

The hotel is located in the heart of Stresa, just minutes away from the bustle of the shops and restaurants. We upgraded to a lake view which was worth the money although as often the case there was a busy road and car park between us and the lake. Our room was on a corner so we had stunning view to the front and side of our room However, as mentioned by another reviewer it could get quite noisy, there is a bar/restaurant at the front of the hotel where people could get pretty rowdy until late at night.

The staff were friendly and helpful in the reception and restaurant. As a vegetarian the food was generally not to my taste (the north of Italy tends to have a stronger appetite for meat than the south), but the head waiter was happy to provide alternatives, either two vegetarian starters, with one as a main course, or I could ask for what I wanted to be prepared so I couldn't fault them. However, my husband does eat meat but wasn;t overly keen on the main courses. The portions were generous and the desserts good. Breakfast was also of a good standard for a cold buffet.

Overall, a good hotel in a great location, close to the ferry port for trips around lake Maggiore. Isola bella had a beautiful palace and gardens but beware if visiting the islands, the toilet facilities were often pretty grim (and sometimes downright shocking) for a civilised country.

I highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Stresa. It's just across the street from the lake, centrally located in the town, has picturesque rooms that tug at memories of the past and boasts a friendly staff that is ready to help you in any way they can. Angela at the front desk was a delight and eager to assist us with anything we needed. The breakfast at the hotel is more than adequate with a bevy of options on the buffet, such as fruit, pastries, breads, cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, etc. From here you can walk to anything in Stresa, and I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

Stayed as part of a tour group, so was a little apprehensive about hotel and the allocation of rooms.

No need to worry, hotel is beautiful, located overlooking the lake and beautiful scenery. Had rooms with private balconies, which were large and comfortable and beautifully decorated. Cleaned every day to a high standard.

All staff were professional and courteous, and willing to help. Special mention to restaurant team who looked after us at breakfast and dinner, who worked so hard. The Head Waiter, even made sure that one evening a special dinner was provided for my niece.

Food was good, and great variety.

I work in the industry, and have travelled extensively, and can honestly say this hotel is worth a visit if you are looking to stay in Stresa.

We were not in the main building, but no one told me this when I made the reservation. and it's really not 4 ****.
Happily the room was with view on the lake (as requested, with extra charge).
The hotel is in front of a public parking = much noise ! Rooms are not soundproof = noise again !
Breakfast is good (served in the main building Hotel Milan) and hotel staff nice.
Parking is free at Hotel Regina, nearby.

I think you can find a real 4 **** in Stresa much better than this one which is not !

I completely agree with Lisa 0131. We were led to believe by our tour company and by the website that this was a four star hotel like the one we had stayed in at Garda which was wonderful but it was a disappointment. The room was dark and dreary. No view, no balcony, poor furnishings, inadequate bathroom. The photos on the website are quite misleading as to the quality of the rooms in the Hotel du Lac.

Dinners were very good and the service was excellent but the hotel badly needs a makeover.
