We were not in the main building, but no one told me this when I made the reservation. and it's really not 4 ****.
Happily the room was with view on the lake (as requested, with extra charge).
The hotel is in front of a public parking = much noise ! Rooms are not soundproof = noise again !
Breakfast is good (served in the main building Hotel Milan) and hotel staff nice.
Parking is free at Hotel Regina, nearby.

I think you can find a real 4 **** in Stresa much better than this one which is not !

I completely agree with Lisa 0131. We were led to believe by our tour company and by the website that this was a four star hotel like the one we had stayed in at Garda which was wonderful but it was a disappointment. The room was dark and dreary. No view, no balcony, poor furnishings, inadequate bathroom. The photos on the website are quite misleading as to the quality of the rooms in the Hotel du Lac.

Dinners were very good and the service was excellent but the hotel badly needs a makeover.

We were fortunate to have a front room overlooking the lake. As we were with a coach party we didn't have much choice of food for the meals, but they were adequate and the service was friendly. A walk-in shower would have been good (some rooms do have them) The position of the hotel was excellent - very convenient for everything. The beds were very comfortable and when we requested extra pillows, the request was met within minutes. We had no problem with air conditioning, plumbing or cleanliness.

Room Tip: If staying 1 night it's perhaps not worth paying extra for a lake view and balcony, but if you intend to use the balcony it might well be worth it.

First I want to clarify, there are two separate but affiliated hotels that are side by side: the Hotel Milan au Lac and Hotel Speranza au Lac. I cannot comment on the Milan au Lac as I only walked through the lobby. This review pertains only to the Speranza au Lac. If you are in a tour group (as I was), be prepared that you will more than likely stay in this hotel.

While our room was a comfortable enough size, the furnishings were old, outdated and extremely basic (no amenities other than the most necessary.) If you are lucky, you might nab a room with a lake view. Some rooms had balconies (which I heard from fellow travelers were not kept clean.) Our room had neither, just a view overlooking the mountains and town, which was still pretty. The bathroom is a compact size. The water in the shower trickled out and we had a choice of two temperatures: freezing cold or scalding hot, nothing in-between. In speaking to others in our group, this seemed to be a fluke in just our room. Yet every room seemed to have one problem or another.

One problem that seemed to be consistent in many of the rooms was virtually non-functioning air conditioning. I am not someone who likes the AC blasting but we were there during a heat wave and the room was stifling. We called the front desk every night to report that the AC was not working effectively, but it made no difference.

Breakfast in the hotel was a sad affair. I have stayed in many hotels in Italy which offer ample, appealing breakfast buffets. This breakfast was set up in a drab room with a very limited selection.

A positive thing about this hotel is that guests are entitled to use the pool at the Hotel Regina Palace, one of the elegant hotels along the lake. The pool is lovely and we went there every day of our stay. Even if you're not interested in swimming, I recommend you walk over there (five minutes away) to see the beautiful, colorful gardens where the pool is located and dream, like we did, that you were staying at that hotel instead!

Other than the pool and a prime location (the lake and ferry landing are in front and the town center is in back) this hotel has nothing going for it. If you are making your own travel arrangements, I recommend you find another hotel.

Good location, opposite ferry landing stage and easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. The room was rather dark and old-fashioned (red plush and bobbles) but well soundproofed so we weren't ever disturbed by the busy road outside, and had a little balcony to enjoy the spectacular view of the lake. The shower worked eccentrically, with the water temperature fluctuating from very hot to cold without our ever touching the controls - we did report this and it improved but it was still very difficult to fix at a comfortable temperature. Breakfast was average - you had to request fruit juice from the (very busy but very quick and helpful) waiters and it was not of a good standard. Fruit on the buffet was either tinned or rather tired.
