“Clean and convenient”
Reviewed June 8, 2008

We thought this hotel was ideal for anyone looking for centrally situated, reasonably priced accommodation. Our 4th floor twin-bedded room was reached by the small lift and although fairly basic, had comfortable if narrow beds and shower etc. on suite. There was limited choice for breakfast but what there was, was fresh and well presented. On one or two evenings there was fairly loud disco music coming from a nearby bar but it had stopped by about 11pm. We found all the staff to be friendly and very helpful and the whole hotel was spotlessly clean.

We have just returned from a week at The Italie & Suisse hotel in Stresa ,Lake Maggiore, booked with a British Lakes and Mountains company.
The brochure advertised the property as having a lift to the 4th floor ,but this is only in the newer part of the hotel (which seemed to me to be reserved for the American, German and Italian tourists). The lift in the other building only goes to the 1st floor, with guests having to walk up 3 floors of uncarpeted, concrete stairs - a clear impossibility for my 80 yr old mother, who has had 2 hip replacements and not much fun for me and I am a fairly fit 50 yr old. I also paid a supplement for a lake view room with balcony ,which we could not use because it was located in the part of the building where the lift only went to the 1st floor. We had to settle for a small basic room with a view onto a wall! This really spoilt our holiday as at her age, my mother likes to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine and enjoy the view. I am presently awaiting a response to my request for a refund of my supplement from the travel company, as they should have made it very clear in their brochure that the lift only went to the 1st floor in their part of the hotel. I would not have considered booking this hotel, had I known this. Also on the 5th day a room became available in the part of the hotel with lift access and we came back from a day out to find that the hotel staff had moved all our personal possessions without our knowledge or permission to this room!!! That's money, passports, jewellery, clothes and personal items! My mother was distraught to think a young man had been through her things. To say we were shocked is an understatement! It was a complete invasion of our privacy but the hotel owner seemed to think this was acceptable behaviour to his guests. I suspect he wanted to rent out our original room and so would not wait for us to get back from our day trip. The resort rep also told us in a note left in our hotel pigeonhole that as we now had the room we should have had at the beginning of our holiday, we would not be able to claim our room supplement back!! OH I THINK NOT!!!
Now for the good things about the Italie & Suisse. The location cannot be bettered. The ferry station and lake is a 1 min walk and the shops, restaurants etc on the doorstep. The rooms are spotlessly clean and the showers very good. The beds are soft but comfortable, and the breakfast, while a bit monotonous every day, (juice, cereal, fruit, cheese, ham, salami, hard bread rolls and sweet cakes) is fine. The hotel is situated on the main road but the traffic noise wasn't at all bad - it was the dreadful singer in the bar next door that was the main annoyance, but he finished at 11 pm and wasn't there every night!! There is no air con and this would be unpleasant on hot summer nights but was OK in late May.
The owner seemed to blame my mother and myself for the fact that his hotel was advertised as having a lift - when it patently did not go to all areas/floors and he wasn't really very sympathetic or helpful. The travel company rep was of no real help at all. He had only been in the job for 2 weeks.
In essence - if you want a clean, well located, fairly basic hotel and you are young and fit enough to take the risk that you will be allocated a room in the building with only 1st floor lift access and you can run up and down four flights of stairs several times a day then this hotel may be fine for you - but it certainly wasn't for us!!!!
Lake Maggiore is lovely though!

On the whole we very much enjoyed our stay at this centrally situated hotel on the banks of Lake Maggiore. The only two negative points were that the lift only reaches the first floor, and we 4 ladies had to carry our cases and bags without any assistance, up 2 or 4 flights of stairs depending on which floor our rooms were situated, and two of us found our mattresses were rather too firm. Infirm or elderly should insist on first floor rooms.

Our rooms had no views but the front of the hotel overlooks the lake, is one minute from the ferry terminal where the boats run frequently to all the beautiful islands. The shops are just a few seconds walk & within a minute you are in the central square where there are many restaurants, particularly the El Torrentino which was so reasonably priced & is the only one to serve all fresh ingredients rather than frozen.

Our rooms were a good size, wooden or tiled floors, bath water does have a brown tinge to it, was quiet at night but cannot speak for height of summer, and the breakfast had a vast choice of cold buffet. Staff friendly and helpful, we had no language problems anywhere. Recommend to all ages.

We did let hotel book our mini bus for transport from the airport which was good but cost 100 euros & we later learned that hotel gets 30% cut so may be better to arrange your own transfer. Returning by booking at an agent across the road, we paid 60 euros.

This hotel was a welcome relief after the dump we stayed at in Florence(hotel la noce). It was great to be in Stresa in May, very calm weather and no need for air conditioning. The only weak point about this place is that its next to the "city hall" and the restaurant under the hotel has entertainment every night...which is a guy singing and playing his keyboard...not what I prefer to listen to when going to bed. He stopped playing at about 11pm but we were in bed by 10 each night b/c there is not much to do in Stresa. Overall, it was a good value and I would stay there again for sure.

It is well maintained, not run down and the rooms looked new. The staff spoke English. Our room had 2 balconies overlooking a square/piazza (noisy) and Lake Maggiore (breathtaking).
Room: clean, large and spacious, with large cupboards. Ceramic floor tiles. Beds are soft – on springs.
Attached shower: large toilet with bidet, shower stall, hair dryer which are all functional. Shower stall however is small.
Hotel’s breakfast buffet: juice, tea/coffee (MacDonald’s coffee tastes better), cereal, hard rolls, cheese, ham, salami, all types of jam, biscuits.
Location: right in Stresa town, with ferries to Lake Maggiore departing opposite the hotel. Hotel does not have its own car park but has reduced rates for the open air public car park across the road. 5-minute walk to supermarket. Shops and restaurants at door step.
Noise at night: the music from a bar in the square plays from evening to late. Bring a good set of ear plugs. Very important!!
Stresa town: no coin-operated laundry shop. Besides Italian food, there is no other type of food within 15km vicinity. This is a warning to those who are not amenable to cheese, pizza and pasta…

There are no aircondition in the room ,in hot July you need to sleep with an open window but after a moment attack you a lot of mosquitos.

I will never return to this hotel.
