We took a morning walk from La Palma Hotel via the S1 trail and were rewarded with this little Alpine Paradise part way up Mottarone. You can drive there...but the hour (plus) walk is rewarding.
The view over Lake Maggiore is stunning but the Alpine Garden is very well maintained and worth a walk around.

The park consists of walkways through set-piece planted areas between trees. In September, there are no flowers to look at, but it’s quite a nice visit, especially as there is a really stunning view point, looking over the lake and looking over towards Switzerland.
The one real down-side is the canned music being played across the park. It’s a rather melancholic version of the music played on the Fairy Tail Brook at Legoland Windsor.

We stopped off here on our way down using the cable cars. It was lovely, plants were often labelled, the view was lovely and after being crowded in the cable car, it was nice to enjoy some fresh air and space.

This garden is set on a stepp hillside and although it is wheelchair accessible part of the way it looked like very hard work. There really wasn't much to see although I think it would be much prettier and colourful in spring when the azaleas and magnolias are in bloom. Only 5-10 minutes easy walk from the cable ca.r

Travel by cable car to this botanic garden, the plants are labelled clearly and the views are amazing. Probably better early in the summer and in autumn rather than high summer.

The Giardino Botanico Alpinia is reached via the intermediate station on cable car from Stresa, however there is also road access to the gardens which has it's own large car park opposite the entrance. It's approximately a 15 mins walk from the cable car station, along a road and is well sign-posted. The gardens aren't huge, but it's very reasonably priced. There is a nice view point where you can sit and take in the views of Lake Maggiore 800 metres below.

Funicular railway from Stresa leads to a paradise of plants and flowers, with wonderful views of the lake and the mountains.

I imagine that the prolonged heat has had an adverse effect on the alpine plants, but their condition and colour was nothing as we had remembered. The garden has been considerably expanded and 'improved' since our last visit with new paved walkways running through the grounds, making it easier to walk around. Unfortunately, the owners have seen fit to install loudspeakers throughout the garden and the entire visit was marred by constant unwanted background music that masked birdsong and turned the place into a theme-park.

That said, the view from the belvedere was still amazing and we sat for some time watching over the lake and the boats travelling back and forth. This alone was worth the entrance fee.

This is a small alpine garden found at the mid point on the cable car. Few tourists there in July and was a refreshing change from the crowded areas. About ten minutes walk from the cable car, entry four euro. As stated this is an alpine garden and flowers tend to be small, the garden is well maintained and has a number of circular short walks. The view from the highest point in the garden over the three islands is exceptional and worth the entry fee for this alone.
Piped music throughout the garden is relaxing but can become irritating after a while. There are no services or food at the garden. At the entrance local wood carvers products are for sale.
Overall worth a stop over on the way to the summit, very peaceful and relaxing. Not a lot here for families with children.

Its only €4 and 10 mins walk from the cable car, so worth doing - spectacular views of Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands.

Flowers a bit sparse as it was late July and had been very hot. Nice to look up at the forest thought.

Toilets weren't working when we were there (no water). Could do with a coffee shop.

Best to go straight up to the top first, and then do this on the way down - less queuing that way.
