We stayed here in September and had a fabulous experience. We were fortunate to have a lake view room on the 5th floor and a corner room with extra windows. The room looked like a palace bedroom. Deluxe everything--- bed linens, towels, toiletries, robes, slippers. The bed was the most comfortable one I had during a 2 week trip to 3 countries. Artwork in the hallways and throughout the hotel like a museum. Now all of this doesn't come cheap....example being the 15 euro gin and tonic. No free Wifi. But despite this, my stay was the highlight of my vacation. If you can't stay here then walk through the lobby and on the hotel grounds.

The hotel is a gem, a museum both in and out. Do remember to visit all floors, as each floor has it's own theme. Staff is extremely humble and helpful. Especially Roberto at concierge was our favorite. Rooms are clean though need renovation. Breakfast is a story for itself. You can have breakfast on the terrace enjoying sun, the lake, the mountains and the garden. The gardens are fabulous. All in all one of the best experience staying in this hotel for 5 nights. Some minuses: They do not have iron or ironing table - you need to give your cloths away for ironing. Internet is of snail-speed. Average age of guests is 78 )))

When we arrived at the Grand Des Iles Borromees we were seriously impressed by the splendour and grandness of the place. However, from the moment we checked in we felt that the atmosphere was not great. Our room, whilst nice was dirty. In fact I found that there were hairs all over the carpet in the bedroom and there were clumps of hair in the bathroom (on the floor and in the bath and sink). It was as if someone had either removed hair from a hairbrush or that the hair had been pulled out of a plughole and just left. To be fair when we spoke to the reception about this they did send someone to sort this out. Breakfast was disappointing as whilst it looked as if there was a lot to chose from some of the selections were not great and the quality of the food was not a good as some of the other hotels that we have stayed in. The staff at breakfast were rude and treated us as if we were invisible - none of them were friendly or cracked a smile. There was no polite conversation and when the waiter brought the tea and coffee it was just dumped on the table without any kind of conversation or acknowledgement of the customer sat at the table. so we were very disappointed at this point in our stay and we would have rated this hotel as poor but then an event changed that! My husband dislocated his shoulder diving in the hotel swimming pool and the staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and good during this emergency. In fact my husband and I would like to thank the reception and swimming pool staff - in particular Roberto who was excellent and his customer service cannot be faulted. In conclusion if my husbands accident had not taken place we do wonder whether the service would have improved or whether we would have left feeling disappointed. We felt that this hotel is trading on its grandness and reputation but that it is missing the finishing touches. The customer service skills and friendliness of the staff needs to be improved - to make the overall experience of this hotel a good one. Improve the substance to match the high quality of the style of this place.

Although we asked for a lakeside view, we were given a garden view (and if we strained our necks, we could see the lake!). We were given a corner room (115). This was absolutely brilliant. A huge balcony, with sunshine all day. Most rooms have small balconies, and for the lakeside views - noisy!
Stresa is lovely; plenty of places to eat. The hotel is great for breakfast, but silly prices for dinner.
I really loved the charm of this hotel, and would go back tomorrow. You have to visit Isola Bella (by ferry) and a day in Milan by train was a doddle. Enjoy!

One of the best Italian Hotels we have stayed in.The cleanliness and presentation of the Hotel cannot be faulted. However, the one aspect of our stay that was excellent was the polite, friendly and attentive attitude of the staff, in particular Roberto, who I believe was the manager of the reception
My wife had an issue with the interior colour of the original room that we were given, (very green!). Roberto went out of his way to resolve the problem and eventually found us a room that exceeded our expectations. The Hotel was around a 10 minute very pleasant walk into Stresa, so it was conveniently located but avoided the noise of the town. The buffet breakfasts were excellent. We only ate in the hotel one evening, the food was good but overpriced. The concierge - Jack - was exceedingly helpful in recommending other restaurants and making reservations on our behalf
My only criticism, is the 1980s style swimming pool that definitely needs a makeover, and also the beds are rather hard. Having said that, would we go back and stay again? Yes; definitely. A big well done to Roberto who made a good stay a brilliant one.

We took the ferry from Tremezzo to, Como & train to Milan without problems however it was a bank holiday which we weren't aware of and transfer from Milan to Magiorre was by what can only be described as a cattle truck . the carriages were overcrowded , no air conditioning , sealed windows and seat reservations didn't apply . The locals sat in our seats wouldn't vacate them and thus caused untold congestion in the corridors of the compartment carriages . Not conducive to travelling with luggage .After a stressful hours journey ( cab fares are w ay too steep) we arrived at a very impressive hotel . Check in was smooth and obliging , room comfortable , but bed and pillows slightly hard . We had a lakeside room with nice view and ample sitting area and small balcony . Room was generally well equipped and comfortable but some noise disturbance from inconsiderate neighbours . stayed 5 nights. Our first impression ; we went down to the pool to chill out after a stressful arrival , very disappointed with the pool area for a hotel of this calibre ; very 1970's needs a major overhaul, cracked , dirty, dated tiles in the pool , rusty pipework , didn't feel like hanging out there and didn't do so again. Not enough umbrellas for shade . ordered a tea and coffee from a very unhelpful and offhand poolside attendant , had to ask twice before it came nearly half an hour later . the coffee was undrinkable and had to be sent back and cost approx £6 each for the privilage . Not a good impression . We also had some teething problems with smells from drains in the bathroom but to be fair this was resolved . I used the indoor pool instead , quieter , cleaner although smaller.
Had one meal in the hotel for our anniversary , it was ok , overpriced really for what it was and no feeling of being made to feel special as it was our anniversary . no bottles of water or treats in the room either unlike the Grand tremezzo where we had just stayed . got the feeling this hotel lives on its reputation and doesn't have to try too hard. Concierge services were variable depending on who was on duty . as the week progressed they became more helpful but got the impression sometimes they just want to get rid of you as quickly as possible . hence on one occasion we missed the bus to Orta as did other tourists due to lack of adequate info; be aware it is a small bus from behind the car park near the Zoo ticket kiosk and not the general main bus stop on the main road as we were led to believe . there are only 3 buses a day and only one in the morning so we had to return the next day . Orta is worth a visit .Also restaurant suggestions from one concierge was no better than an Mc Donalds and so we did our own research on the internet ,other trip advisor suggestions of restaurants were helpful .
generally I would recommend this hotel if you are staying in Stresa but the hotel needs to up its game in some areas. Overall most staff were helpful and obliging ,but some were offhand .Eat in Stresa itself or venture further afield if you have a car we didn't
As for the attractions ; Definitely recommend . Villa Taranto On Verbania . Mount Mattarone cable car and as for the 3 Borromeean isl I would tackle them in this order ; first thing in the am before it gets hot ,Isola Madre, Isola Bella ( most tourists do it the other way round and its more crowded that way ) and Piscatorre if you must, as the ticket incl the travel and there are no sights . personally the queuing on Piscatore for the ferries is not worth it . An overcrowded tourist swamped fishing village that hasn't retained its charm due to too many restaurants and cheap souvenir stands . dont bother , go to Orta another day instead for quaint picturesque. In Stresa we found the tour office misleading , they wanted to sell us a different tour and told us there is only one public bus out to orta a week . get information from the office next door to the Navagazzione , more reliable. Otherwise a nice stay at this hotel but by comparison preferred Grand Hotel Tremezzo when one compares standards and attention to detail. good buffet breakfast .

Room Tip: We stayed in junior suite lakeside .

Hotel looks like a museum, a lot of flowers, very good location. However, in rooms with lake view, a noise from the main street between the hotel and lake, makes impossible to sleep with the window open! Breakfast very good. Hotel service leaves much to be desired, especially in the restaurant and at the pool (the pool was not serviced half of our stay). Room service not so good as well.
I could give: location - 5 points, hotel designe - 5 points, service - 2 points, value for money - 4 points
