As cable car from Stresa to Alpino was not operating on the day we were told to take the shuttle bus and then take cable car to the Mottarone. Shuttle buses run every thirty minutes, but as it is a mini van only limited number of passengers can get on. On the return back we and many others waited for more than one and half hours. And even then some people were left behind. On the cold and rainy day this can be quite an unpleasant experience

Turned up at cable car station in Stresa to be told the cable car for the first half of the ascent was broken and the journey would be by bus, so we duly paid our 18 euro each (+2 for the privilege of having the ticket). 20 minute bus journey took us half way and then transferred to cable car for less than 10 minutes to reach Monterrone. Nothing there except one tired looking restaurant and a chairlift (supposedly included in the price) to take you the final 100m to the viewing deck, but that was closed. So, nothing to do but get cable car back again to the alpine gardens ( additional entrance fee) and then waited 90 minutes for a bus to turn up and take us back to Stresa. Bedlam boarding bus as so many waiting and no queueing system. Complete waste of time and money.

Great views and experience. Interesting just to see houses and farms as you headed upwards. It had snowed the day before on top of the mountains. There was still some ice around. Glorious

We climbed the Mottarone by car this december, as the cable car was closed. We didn't have to pay the toll because nobody was at duty at the toll booth, that was better for us as we came from Verbania (north) and were going to the Orta Lake (south), so we climbed via Alpino and we went down by the southern road. The views to the north from the cable car station are breathtaking, the Alps and the Lake Maggiore. A "must" if you are in Verbania or Stresa.
