Villa Maria Hotel
Ranked #66 of 67 Hotels in Sirmione
Reviewed November 24, 2012

This was our fourth visit to Sirmione - it is a special place, located at the tip of of a long, narrow peninsular at the base of Lake Garda. Unfortunately, we only had time for a one night stay this time. On previous visits, we've stayed at hotels along the peninsular, this time we decided to stay in the old town, which is the historical centre right at the tip. Access is via a small roadbridge next to the castle. You can only drive into the pedestrianised old town if you have a hotel reservation - this will be checked against a list held at the gatehouse. Driving through the old town is a challenge in itself, negotiating narrow streets filled with herds of tourists (not recommended if you intend to drive in and out on a daily basis).

Hotel Villa Maria is situated at the far end of the old town and is surprisingly quiet and peaceful given its close proximity to the bustling centre of shops, cafes and restaurants. It has a small private car park. Check-in and out is at its sister hotel, the Hotel Continental which is a short walk away, next to the Aquaria Spa. There is no restaurant at Villa Maria, so we used the restaurant at the Continental which was very good, with a great view of the lake. Villa Maria is not a luxury hotel and the decor is a bit dated, but our room was simple and spotlessly clean. We paid 95 euros (B&B) for a lake view room, which was good value given its location. It was a reasonable size with an ensuite bathroom, air conditioning (not the greatest) and a small balcony with a lake view (albeit over the rooftops). Breakfast was ample with nice bread rolls, pastries, cheese, fruit etc. We did notice some cats outside the hotel, but they were neither mangy nor troublesome. The hotel is in a very good location, easy walking distance to the Grotte di Catullo (Roman ruins with museum, well worth a visit) and the Thermal Spa, and maze of shops, ice cream parlours and restaurants. If visiting, be sure to try the local white wine, Lugana, which is only produced in a small region at the base of Lake Garda.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra for a lake view - it may be across rooftops, but still a good view.

Hotel Villa Maria is an unmanned block of 80's hotel rooms, the entrance has a damp smell about it as do the corridors. You have to check in and out at the 4* Hotel Continental you can eat and drink at the Continental but you most certainly cannot use any other guest amenities ie Pool you are make to feel like the riff raff from up the road. The Hotel Maria has no guest facilities bar, reception or restaurant. Breakfast is basic a limited selection of friut, meat and pastries, occasionally there is someone in attendance at breakfast. The feral cats have the run of the terrace making eating unpleasant as some of the cats are skin and bone and injured. The car park is small and you can get blocked in easily and with no reception at the hotel it is a wait for the parking to be sorted out by the hotel continental. For a 3* hotel there is no service apart from daily replenishment of towels and the room made up which is always clean. The AC is adequate but only just. It would be nice to see a bar, and refurbishment of the entrance area and corridors, they haven't been updated since the 80's could be even longer It is not a hotel you can relax in. If you need a pool you can use the thermal Spa which is just next to the continental. It has a pool right next to the lake but will cost you per person 88 euros Monday to Friday and 33 euros daily Saturday and Sunday. This hotel is a very cheap way of being able to stay in the centre of Sirmione.

Good value easy walk to the ruins, the lake and all the good eats in town. This place is in the heart of the old town and quite a ride in on the weekend but will worth the stop over. They are a sister property of hotel continital the people were nice as long as we stayed away from the the nicer property. They made me feel like I was doing something wrong sitting by the pool and around the lake even though we check in here and it was the same company we clearly had to go up to our room across the street. Rooms were clean, AC,good view good value.

The Villa Maria is an annexe of the Hotel Continental. We stayed there for 3 nights while visiting the opera in Verona. The rooms were quite adequate, air conditioned and the shower toilet was clean wit amenities such as soap etc all provided. Nice fresh towels were a nice touch. The breakfast room was quite adequate (there is no restaurant) and the breakfast buffet was comprehensive. In addition to the seating outside of Villa Maria guests at the Villa Maria can use the bar and patio at the Continental Hotel which is very luxurious. The Villa Maria is a short walk from the historic town of Sirmione and its restaurants, and the lake a thermal spa are nearby for those who want to swim of sunbathe. Excellent value for money for those seeking budget accomodation in the Garda area.

Room Tip: The lake facing rooms all have a small balcony. Thise at the back of the hotel do not.

This hotel is lovely and quiet. It is not really staffed as the main hotel is around the corner so it is really peaceful and quiet. My boyfriend and I felt like we were the only people staying there, which was nice at breakfast etc but at night time it felt a little creepy sometimes, but that's probably just me. The room was minimal but lovely, clean and comfortable with a small balcony and television with some English channels. Breakfast was continental as usual, with nice hams, cheeses and pastries. There is a lido 5 minutes around the corner from this hotel which is great because you can pop down before it gets busy and all the other holiday makers find it. Sirmione is also beautiful, would advise a stay for 2 or 3 nights!

Nice view to the lake, friendly personell. Very good relation price/value, free and easy parking.
An absolute must: the restaurant of the sister hotel Continental: excellent food, fantastic view over the lake, charming waiters and reasonable prices.

Less amazing: access by car through the historical city with thousands of tourists behaving like sheeps...

Getting into the historical centre of Sirmione by car is a bit of a hassle but I would recommend Villa Maria if you want to stay in the centre for a reasonable price. The room was a good size, clean, with a nice bathroom, shower and plenty of towels. The hotel was unattended buy staff most of the time and check in and out had to be done at the nearby continental hotel, but this caused no problems and all staff we encountered were helpful and friendly. To get to the hotel on foot there is a short uphill walk to negotiate!
