This is our third visit from Australia to Italy and our only truly bad eating experience to date... This restaurant is located on a really busy street in Sirmione on Lake Garda. We were staying in Desenzano for a week and ate at several brilliant restaurants, but this day we were visiting Sirmione and decided to have lunch at Il Girasole in this beautiful historic town known for its remedial health spas.
We were shown, in a cursory manner, to a table on the terrace amongst several tables filled with smokers. We asked to sit inside and this was met with a cold response. We ordered 2 salads, deserts, mineral water and asked for half a bottle of Lugana wine. The food was mediocre for the price and the wine, brought in a carafe, was clearly old and vinegary. The staff would have known this from the colour alone but chose to serve it to us. We only took one sip and pushed the glasses and carafe to the other side of the table. We would have said something but had little opportunity as we were basically ignored by the staff (in contrast they paid great attention to some locals on a nearby table). We decided not to spoil our holiday by arguing the point and paid for the wine anyway, but mentioned that they might want to check their stock as the wine was "off" and in Italian we mentioned it did not taste very nice.
The staff did finally apologise, however it took quite some time for this to occur. I'm sure our limited knowledge of Italian did not help matters, however we felt as if we were treated as second class citizens despite our very civil and friendly approach.
