Agriturismo Castello di Vezio
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 21, 2014

My husband and I recently traveled to this lovely Agriturismo in Lake Como, Italy with my mother (who was visiting from the States) and our two small dogs. We stayed in Casa Milena, a beautiful two bedroom, one bath cottage overlooking the lake. The house is tucked away from the rest of the grounds and offers peace and quiet. The views from all of the rooms are beautiful and each bedroom has a small terrace with chairs. There was a bit of snow on the ground the first day we arrived, and the management took our luggage down the steep path to the house by golf cart. The house is clean, comfortable, and has a fully appointed kitchen, with plenty of cookware and utensils. The fridge is spacious and management even provided milk, bread, jam, and butter for our stay! There are laundry facilities in the house for those with long stays. The olive trees around the grounds are gorgeous, and there is opportunity to purchase some of their delicious homemade olive oil. There are walking paths down to the town of Varenna (we didn't go the entire way due to snow/rain) and plenty of space for dogs to run and play. We were provided with firewood and kept a fire roaring throughout the duration of our stay to keep the cottage warm and cozy. We spent the majority of the trip relaxing by the fire, but did venture down to Varenna (10-12 min drive). During the winter months the town and surrounding area is very quiet. My husband and I would like to return during the summer months to tour the nearby castle (Castello di Vezio) and swim in the pool (both of which you can't do during the winter!). The Agriturismo is located up a hill and is accessed by a winding, mountain road. It is paved but very narrow (not good for large vehicles). We were glad to have arrived before the sun set, as it is more difficult to maneuver at night. We also had a personal vehicle, which made getting around easier. In closing, wonderful stay and hope to return.

Room Tip: Casa Milena is very spacious, can easily accommodate 4-6 guests (maybe more). It is also very quiet...

I had the opportunity to explore Lake Como Italy in April 2012. I stayed at the Agriturismo Castello di Vezio located just above the town Varenna. I was dropped at the property by taxi and the manager greeted me at the gate promptly, there was no language barrier at all, I felt very comfortable and very welcomed! The grounds were wonderful, very well kept, the views of the lake and mountains were unbelievable! I think there were nine villas, sleeping 2-15 people. The villas were great, full kitchens, nice spacious living areas and wonderful views to wake up to! They had a great mix of modern comforts and rustic character; updated bathrooms with exposed rock walls etc. The innkeeper was never hard to find and was full of wonderful information(and she made a great cappuccino). I spent the majority of my time hiking through the hills and exploring the lakeside villages. There are hiking trails going right off the property, including a short hike to a castle, and longer hikes that extend many miles through the hillside following the lake shore. My favorite hike was a single track trail through the olive grove that is on the grounds (make sure you pick up a bottle of olive oil made from these olives, it is great!), along the wooded hillside overlooking the lake to the shortest river in Italy flowing out of the mountain down to Lake Como. From the property you can get to the Varenna below by road or by walking a cobblestone mule track. Once in Varenna there are many restaurants, shops, and easy access to all the towns on the lake by ferry and hydrofoil boats. My time here was spectacular, I had many great experiences and met wonderful people.

My wife and I stayed in Selva and we loved it. Amazing views, well appointed kitchen. The shared pool was usually empty. The views were incredible and the whole property is well kept. We highly recommend this place.

I registered with Tripadvisor just to post this review because we loved this place so much. We were at Agriturismo Castello di Vezio in the beginning of October and stayed for a week in Casa Cima.

The place is wonderful. The views are unbelievable. We played tennis a lot. We will be back next summer for sure.

We searched for a long time for a property that would be appropriate for our 18 month-old daughter, who loves to run and play. While we saw many options online for apartments with balconies, right on the water, the authenticity and sprawling grounds of the Agriturismo Castello di Vezio drew us in. We booked rather last minute so the only option available was Casa Cristina, which is the smallest apartment on the property, but it was perfect for our needs and felt like a pretty good value for the price. The apartment itself is cute and well-appointed, with a small but modern kitchen and bath. Our only complaint was that because Casa Cristina is a ground-floor apartment, there are no windows in the bedroom or bathroom and it can become uncomfortably damp in the bedroom. But the main room in the apartment opens right out to the manicured lawn with breathtaking views of the lake. The grounds feature a shared pool (other villas have private pools), tennis, bocce, and lawn furniture. There is a common area with books, newspapers, and tables for breakfast, which we did not take advantage of because we enjoyed breakfast al fresco on our patio or on the lawn overlooking the lake.
The staff was very kind and helpful (hello Luana! Wishing you all the best!) and welcoming to our 18 month-old daughter.
Vezio is a small and "authentic" town about a ten minute's drive uphill from Varenna. The drive at night is not for the faint of heart -- so plan your evenings accordingly! We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of the Eastern side of the lake, however, and much preferred it to the bustling Western coast.
We would love to return one day with our family and friends -- this would be an ideal location to celebrate a special occasion.

Fantastic location.
Relaxing and wondeful view.
How easy it is to feel like home, when everything is correctly settled by the host.
Garden, Swimming pool, playground your children will enjoy as mine did.
I came back twice already and will definitevely repeat.

We stayed in Casa Costanza for three nights. The first floor apartment is in the medieval village of Vezio just a short walk outside the gates of Agriturismo Castello di Vezio. At the time we booked it, it was so new that it hadn't been added to the website yet. We were sent a few pictures of it and decided to go ahead and try it. Wow! It was beautiful and we absolutely loved being part of the village.

The apartment is newly renovated and gorgeous! The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots, silverware, etc. and a beautiful new stove. Luana supplied some cereal, coffee, tea, sugar, bread, jams, butter, and milk on our arrival. The unit has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and doors to a back patio, and another with two twin beds and space for a third folding bed. The bathroom has a huge tub with a shower and a vessel sink. There is also a small laundry room with a small washing machine. The living room has a comfortable sofa, a fireplace, and built-in book shelves. No wifi in the apartment but it is available in the recreation room of the Agriturismo. There is a very nice small patio in the front for your morning coffee or afternoon tea. We just loved this place!

Vezio has a very good Italian restaurant, Ristorante bar il Portichetto, and it is right next door to Casa Costanza. The owner, Rita, speaks very good English and is very friendly. She even brought out some of her homemade after dinner cordial for us to try. Excellent!

There is also a church just behind Casa Costanza, and it has a large bell that rings every half hour. Very quaint during the day but if you are a light sleeper it could keep you awake at night. We were so tired every night that it didn't bother us.

The views from the grounds of Agriturismo Castello di Vezio are simply amazing! Pictures just don't do it justice. You have to see it for yourself.

Now for the walking paths to and from Varenna. Do not attempt it with luggage if you take the train to Varenna as we did. And be prepared to use your phone to call a taxi. We came on the train and there weren't any taxis just waiting at the station. You need to call one from one of the signs outside of the station. It costs 10 Euros. Without luggage the paths (there are two) are do able but be equipped with decent walking shoes (no flip flops, loose sandals, etc.) and be prepared to make several stops to catch your breathe when going uphill. The one path is mainly cobblestones and gravel. The other path is pretty steep and is mostly large rocks, grass and gravel. About 15-20 minutes downhill and about 25-30 uphill. Best idea is to take the path down and take the taxi back up.

Staff is great. Luana was always prompt in answering my emails and was very helpful when we arrived.
