Varenna is a delightful, non-touristy spot on Lake Como. Our hosts at Villa Albertina recommended this restaurant - "it's where the locals eat".
Three of had lunch in the picturesque Piazza San Giorgio at Albergo Del Sole. It was a lovely sunny afternoon so we sat outside in the piazza. It was terrific.
We had pizza diavola (8.5 E), pork cutlet (9 E), lake fish with butter and sage (11E), sides of insalata verde (6) and potatoes (5), a litre of vino della casa rosso (11), a litre of aqua minerale frizzante (2.5), and a couple of coffees.
Northern Italian bread is always disappointing, so the restaurant cannot be blamed for this shortcoming.
The pizza (tomato, mozzarella and spicy salami) was large, had a thin crisp crust, and was delicious. The potatoes were – well – potatoes. The pork was tender, the fish was OK, and the salad was extra fresh.
With coperto (2 Euro per person), the bill was a very reasonable 62 EUR. Definitely value for money in a restaurant recommended and frequented by the locals.
On another cold and wet day, two of us ate inside in pleasant surroundings.
We had a bottle of excellent Cusumano Nero D’Avola 2011 (Euro 15), and shared penne arrabbiata (tomato, garlic, chilli and parsley) for 6 euro, followed by funghi e prosciutto pizza (8.5), plus 1L of aqua (2.50). Everything was excellent, although the pasta was slightly past al dente.
