Our experience was that the food was quite good, the ambiance cozy and charming, and the service very good. Considering the quality of the food and the location, the prices are reasonable. We were there about 6 months ago, and every table in the small room was taken, so it is important to book ahead of time.

The gentleman who acted as waiter/bartender/maitre 'd had his hands full, but he moved like lightning, all the while maintaining grace and good humor. He attracted admiration from the patrons when he leapt up onto the top of the bar in order to reach a particular bottle of wine stored on one of the very highest shelves.

As we left, we compared notes with another couple who told us they were also quite happy with their dinner. If we had been staying longer in Varenna, I'm sure we would have been back.

I first want to say that the last 2 reviews must have been together, and just had an unfortunate bad experience. We were there April 1st and had a wonderful time. We had a great vibe to the place, there was only one table open and everyone looked very happy! The staff included one server and the chef, both extremely nice and attentive and very friendly. They do have house wine by the glass and they also have by the bottle....reasonably priced for lake como. The food was delicious....and I am a very picky eater. Please keep in mind that the restaurant is very small, I believe there are only 5 tables inside and 2 outside. We sat at the table directly "under the bar".....there really is no bar and had no problem what so ever. This place is very good and reasonably priced for the area. We are actually going there right now again for dinner! Oh, and my husband had their "secret dish".....it was a pasta dish....DELICIOUS!!!
We highly recommend this place!

We made a reservation at this place and got a weird feeling about it. It was empty at 8pm the night before we arrived (when we made our reservation) and was empty when we walked by at 11pm. It is a tiny place, and had good reviews, so we tried it out.

The feeling we got was really weird. Again, at 8:30pm, we were the only people there. We were seated at a small table directly under the bar, where the staff seemed to hover over us and even eavesdropped and broke into our conversation. Pretty creepy. In Italy I typically have the house wine, finding it good and very affordable. Borgovino has no house wine! Their least expensive wine started at 24 Euros a bottle! That's what I expect in America, where wine is a profit center, not in Italy, where good, affordable wine is part is life.

We shared dried, salted lake herring. It was OK. We then had an overpriced pasta dish that, too, was OK. One Italian couple came in, and left before we did--if that tells you anything. Italians don't come to restaurants to eat and run. We had to stay because of our expensive bottle of wine. We finished up and went to Quatro Pass, where we had dined the previous evening, and had a salad and dessert. This place was that bad--we left and finished eating at another restaurant!

Save yourself some money and go down the quaint street to Quatro Pass. You will be glad you did. This place is not recommended.

After reading other reviews, I wonder if Borgovino has been sold or some other calamity has befallen it. It's a small place, but we were the only table there at prime time. Another tourist couple came in, but no locals. We asked for the house wine (usually very good and reasonably priced in Italy), but were told there house wine was a 25 euro bottle. We went with it and the wine was swill! The food we had was adequate (filled pasta, local dried fish), but the atmosphere was weird. Hard to describe, but we were seated by the bar and the owner (?) was lurking at the bar listening to us. The waiter was also attentive at all the wrong moments. The vibe was so weird we left early and went to another restaurant for salad and dessert. After reading the glowing reviews, this is a disappointment.

Tucked away in a cobbled backstreet Borgovino is a cosy little cavern of a place. The service, whilst friendly was a tiny bit slow, but only because everything else was so good that the place was so busy. The food here is beautiful.
