“Wish we'd looked for a boutique hotel rather than this”
Reviewed June 16, 2012

This hotel is ok but honestly I wish we had looked around for something more boutique, ie smaller and more intimate. Basically what you pay for here is access to Lake Como itself. To be honest, that's not such a big deal. You're there to see the lake anyway so you're bound to do a tour or trip of some kind and discover its wonders. Como is a tiny place so the lake is never far away at any time.

Now, about the hotel. The room was very small and pokey for the price. It was neat and clean but just ok. It had a shower that was all design and no function. It had no door on it with the predictable result that the bathroom floor becomes awash no matter how careful you are trying to avoid that result. The hotel also make you pay for a wifi service that almost requires a PhD to navigate. Ridiculous. It has an adequate continental breakfast but the kitchen was seriously understaffed when we were there. I felt really really sorry for the two very pleasant ladies who had to look after about 50 odd people. It was an impossible ask. There were also some really loud Americans and Australians staying there at the time and quit frankly their loud chatter was innane and annoying.

I loved Como and would certainly love to go there again. But if I do I'll try for a smaller hungrier boutique hotel somewhere in the back streets of Como or, probably more likely, try and book somewhere else on the lake like the gorgeous town of Bellagio.

This traditional hotel has a town centre location, close to Como Lago Nord Station (5 mins walk – with direct trains into Milan) and the ferry terminals, however the down side is the bedrooms overlooking the Piazza Cavour and the lake do suffer from noise traffic.
Como is a pretty town, with great shops and restaurants, and not as touristy as some other locations further up the lake.
A convenient location for hopping onto the ferries which transport you up stunning Lake Como.

Reception staff at the hotel are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Porter service was provided to take luggage to the room.

We booked a deluxe room overlooking Piazza Cavour and the lake, which was large and stylish, with walk in wardrobe with plenty of hanging and storage space (and a free safe), minibar, desk and chair, wall mounted flat screen TV, a very comfortable bed with good quality linen and pillows but no tea or coffee making facilities. There are both internal and external window shutters, but no blackout curtains. Nice bathroom, (shower over the bath) with good quality towels, bathrobes, slippers.

Continental breakfast is served in a small breakfast room or you can eat outside on an adjacent terrace. Typical fare of juice, cereals, fresh fruit salad, cold meats, pre packaged cheeses, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, breads and tea/coffee. Gluten free rolls and crackers are also provided if you have special dietary requirements.

Nice hotel, but probably a little overpriced for what you get, breakfast just reasonable.

We were not at all impressed by this hotel. We stayed in what is known as the tower room which was identified as perfect for an honeymoon but instead it was small and impractical. The room is two stories. You need to leave your suitcases on the bottom floor where the bathroom is while the room is upstairs accessed by a very narrow spiral staircase. Going up and down was a pain especially at night and might be a little dangerous for someone who doesn't move around well. For $370/night, Internet was not available in our room at all (they did have Internet in the lobby which they proudly told me was free). In the bathroom, there was no plug for a hair dryer (there is a shaver plug) so she had to blow dry upstairs with no mirror. Furntiure and carpet in the room were second rate. Front desk service was fine but not like we have have experienced at other top rated Trip Advisor hotels. On the Hotel website it shows a view of the hotel from the Lake where you can see the hotel directly. As of May 2012 the city has built an 8 ft wall around the lake to "block construction" they are doing on the water front completely obstructing the lake view from the ground floor. Other notes: breakfast was better than average on our trip through Italy, there is a small fitness center, and the view from the room as fairly good - a partially obstructed view of the lake. Pictures added to Trip Advisor as well.

We booked 3 rooms (one double and two singles) using Otel.com and got a much lower rate than through other online sites. We even got an extra 10% discount through Facebook. The rooms we booked were basic, standard no lake view. BUT - I emailed the hotel in advance to explain we were coming for my mother's 80th birthday and to ask if they could give her an upgraded room. They put her in a lovely lake-front room on the 3rd floor and put the rest of us in the same hallway.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful - including the front desk men/women and the two lovely ladies in the breakfast room.
On a slow day, one of the employees showed me around to various rooms in the hotel. There is a very wide variety of room types, sizes and furnishings. Some of the rooms have large glass shower cubicles located in the bedroom area, others have bathtubs, some have very modern furnishings whereas our rooms had lovely old wooden furniture. Personally, I liked the old rooms best as they had more personality.
The breakfast was a cold buffet but a hot 'English' breakfast was available for a supplement. We found the buffet perfectly adequate. The coffee was served with steamed milk and refills were available upon request.
The hotel is very near the boats that take you to various other lake destinations (Bellagio, Torno, and Leno were our favorites). The location is also central for the cathedral and dozens of restaurants.
We had no need for a car but the hotel does have parking facilities. The train station is only a block away as well.

Room Tip: Wide variety of rooms. Send an email to the hotel before you arrive and explain what you want (lake...

This is a lovely hotel, right on the front of the lake. The staff all speak great English and are very helpful and accommodating. We booked a junior suite, which was outrageously expensive for what it was, just a slightly bigger than usual room with 2 chairs !! but the decor was lovely and all the fittings were really nice, we had a huge balcony with table chairs and recliners - although no one put any cushions on these, which should have been a standard given that they were metal. There is no pool and the sauna incurs an extra cost, given the price of the rooms this could have been thrown in for free. Bathroom was a generous size as well but the toiletries were a bit mean- no hair conditioner! Breakfasts were typically Italian, cold cuts. But everything was very fresh and the service was good. We didn't eat there otherwise as we were in a really good position to eat out - there is plenty of casual and formal dining. All in all a pricey but enjoyable stay, good transport links.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the lake, the view is great but there is a road.

We stayed two nights at this lovely, centrally located, charming hotel. As a base to explore the Lakes, it's great. Our room was large and nicely decorated, with a good size bedroom, sitting room with a desk and couch, and nice bathroom. Bed, pillows, and linens were wonderful. The windows overlooked the main square of town. It was rainy and cold in early May, so they stayed closed most of the time, which minimized traffic noise. But we had a big surprise on May Day-a political rally with brass bands right outside our window. We were away all day, but came back in the evening to continuing bands (loud rock) blaring until 9pm. Good thing we didn't want a lazy napping day.
The staff was helpful and extremely friendly. They helped us with maps and suggestions. Even directed us to a local pub to watch a big football game. The hotel restaurant was outstanding. Menu leans toward the northern climes (wienerschnitzel), excellently prepared and served with a smile. I would definitely recommend this as a stop in Northern Italy.

Have now stayed here twice and have mixed views. The hotel sits right on Lake Como; however, given the high barricade around this part of the lake (not the hotel's fault), you really can't see the lake other than from the top floors (and most expensive rooms).

Definitely go with a "deluxe" room. The regular rooms are newly remodeled but are small and dark, with only a bed and desk chair. It's cramped for one -- impossible for two. And you can't really do anything there but sleep. The bath is nicely appointed but VERY small. No in-room safe and the views are . . . non-existent. I overlooked an alley where I could hear cars pulling up and people dumping garbage all night long. They hadn't yet turned on the A/C for the year, so the only way to keep the room cool was to open the window, which in turn let in the noise.

The deluxe rooms are larger and lighter with a more comfortable bed, a very nice bathroom and a chair you can sit in to read/relax. My room overlooked the square. In-room safe, bathrobe, turndown service. Worth the extra money. All rooms have flat-screen TVs but the ones in the deluxe rooms are larger.

The hotel has a nice restaurant, although there are so many good places to eat within easy walking distance. Breakfast in the morning is European style (meat, cheese, cereal, yogurt) but you can have eggs for an extra charge. Service was friendly and prompt.

The front desk personnel vary from extremely friendly and helpful to borderline rude -- depends on whom you get. Internet used to be free; now you buy a card in increments of 1 hr, 3 hrs, and all day. Connection is easy and quick. There's a single small elevator but, even when the hotel was full, there's rarely a wait. And, given that the hotel is only 4 floors, you can walk up and down the stairs quite easily.

Bathroom amenities are a bit on the scanty side. The bar of soap is tiny. You get shampoo but no conditioner. And they don't replace anything until it's 100% gone. Towels are better than you might expect, with a heated rack.

Overall, it's a decent hotel in a great location. If you're staying for more than a night -- or are traveling as a couple -- definitely choose your room with care.
