“The best place to stay in Bellagio”
Reviewed August 12, 2009

We stayed in a Lake Views double room for 110 euros a night. This is the way to go. The views room or standard double room would have quite the experience we did. Whichever way, the hotel itself is excellent. Location is ideal.

Rooms themselves have a good, small bathroom and television, although little things (that don't matter) like the cupboards are a bit dated.

Staff are lovely, breakfast is extensive and tasty, the hotel is super clean and the fish restaurant downstairs AMAZING. Really ample serves for what you pay and incredible meals. Best we had in Italy.

I know some people complain about the walk from the town of Bellagio, and I see their point (the road is narrow and walled), but the way to do it is definitely walk as far you can through the Villa del Mezi gardens. Beautiful walk and only 9 euro for 3 days free entrance. Do it!

My husband and I stayed here in April 2008 for about 115 euro/night for a double room with ensuite facilities, breakfast, and a spectacular view of Lago di Como!

The room was fair sized, and the bathroom spacious in comparison to other European experiences! Everything was very clean. But we hardly glanced at the room the whole time we were there, except to sleep - we spent all of our time on our amazing balcony or in the town below!

Breakfast was a delicious buffet including hot and cold drinks, pastries, bagels, cakes, cereal, yogurt/muesli, etc - served in the restaurant on the first level of the building (which has a huge glass seating area that overlooks the lake!). We ate at this restaurant for dinner 2 of our nights here, and were pleased with the food and service, although all the prices in Europe seemed high to us as the Euro was 1.5 Dollars...

Wireless internet was provided, which always gets major points from us, but there were no phones in the room which was very frustrating (our computer crashed and there was no way to call Dell to get it fixed - so we were basically cut off from the outside world. Not always a bad thing, but still....) The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful in this situation and many others, even driving us into town to save us the walk and calling to make us an appointment with a travel agent in town who could help us with buying our train tickets for our next destination, since we could no longer access the internet. Nothing was too much to ask of them.

The hotel is situated on a hill, which makes for great views. The only problem is getting down to the village on foot - there isn't a lot of traffic on the narrow road leading up to the hotel, but it seems like a lot when you're sharing the roadway on foot (and if you've been to Europe, you know how they drive). The walk took us about 10 minutes going down, maybe a little more going uphill. :) There is another option to walk through some gardens along the lake, but you have to pay for those, and we were already pushing our budget, so we risked the roadway (without incident).

Bellagio itself we found adorable, but very touristy, and aimed at shoppers with not much else to do. However, if you ask the reception at the hotel, they can guide you to a beautiful short walk that takes you the opposite way from the road, to a village called Pescale. My husband and I loved this walk and the small village, which looks over the other side of the lake. The walk through Pescale eventually leads you into Bellagio (the back way) - and past a candy/pastry shop which we patronized frequently during our stay. :)

Another possibility is the short hike down to the water's edge and rocky beach, seen from the balconies of the hotel. You have to walk along a neighborhood road for some of the way, and then down a drive that goes through a beautiful walled estate. From the beach you can get yet another perspective on the beautiful lake, as well as a good view of Hotel Silvio across the water!

I also recommend walking all the way through Bellagio (from the hotel, past all the shops) to the very end of the island - there is a little park with benches to sit on and amazing views onto the water and the surrounding mountains. The access to this park is right next to a restaurant, which has an outdoor terrace, but we didn't get to eat there as it was closed at the time (we were there at midday).

In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bellagio and it was made perfect by our stay at Hotel Silvio. We would definitely stay here were we to come again, and would recommend it to everyone.

We stayed here for 4 days. I found the hotel after trawling the internet for something with a sensible price tag. The hotel is great value for money. The rooms are clean with many of them having balconies that overlook the lake. It's worth paying a few extra euro's for the benefit as the lake is stunning.

The hotel staff are really friendly and the receptionist went out of her way to help us find a canyoning company when one let us down. The restaurant at the hotel overlooks the lake and also has a terrace area outside. The food is gorgeous, i'd definitely recommend the balsamic vinegar steak.

The hotel is set at the top of a hill. There are some steps down to some gardens which you can walk through to get to Bellagio town. It's a gorgeous 15-20mins walk along the lake and although you have to pay a few euros for a ticket to walk through the gardens you can get a 3 day ticket which is a bit cheaper and its definitely worth it. There are a couple of other routes into town, or you can drive down in about 5 mins and park there .

We stayed in several hotels in Italy whilst on our trip and this was definitely one of the best.

We recently spent a month in Italy for our honeymoon. Hotel Silvio was one of the best places we stayed. The room was clean, new and a reasonable size. We had a small balcony that had gorgeous views of the lake. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is amazing...the fish pate is a must!!

It is about a 10 min walk into Bellagio. The worst part is having to walk along the road that is barely wide enough for the cars.

All in all this hotel was great value and very memorable for us.

The hotel is built on the side of a hill, there are rooms on the ground floor (same level as reception), first floor and up in the roof. You go down a level to reach the restaurant and bar. Outside are a number of terraced areas, some with tables and chairs, some with sunloungers. We stayed in room 14 which is a superior double situated on the first floor (one floor up from reception). The room has a balcony big enough for a table, two reclining chairs and a sunlounger. The view is truly spectacular. The room is small but clean and well decorated. There are no facilities for making tea/coffee in the room. On either side are rooms described as “front lake view double”. From the outside, I could see nothing that made these rooms different from the SD. I had a peek at some of the other rooms on this floor. Due to the shape of the landscape, the rooms facing towards Bellagio, have a good, partial view of the lake. The rooms facing away from Bellagio have a pleasant view of the hills but a more limited view of the lake.
Breakfast is not brilliant. There is no hot food and a very limited selection of cold food. Bread, ham, cheese, a few cereals and some fruit. The hotel lets itself down here. Not only are the options limited but the breakfast staff are bad at keeping everything topped up. The milk, water in the juice machine and bread would be allowed to run out and would only be replenished when requested. However, the staff were happy for me to load up a tray so that my wife and I could eat breakfast on our balcony which was fantastic.
The restaurant, however, is excellent. The staff are attentive, friendly and helpful and the food is very good. My only reservation would be the limted selection of main courses although what was offered was very good.
The staff in general were very friendly, helpful and eager to please.
The hotel is situated quite close to the town of Bellagio. If you choose to walk, there is a short stretch (about 300 yards) where there is no sidewalk and stone walls on either side so the road gets a bit scary if there is traffic in both directions. This stretch is on a steep slope so, if you have mobility problems, this walk will prove difficult.
To reach the hotel, we drove through Como and along the lakeside road via Torno and Nesso to Bellagio. At times this road is quite narrow and in need of repair and meeting lorries and coaches coming the other will test your nerves. On the way home, we took the car ferry across to Cadenabbia and drove back on the other side of the lake. The road on that side is wider and in a better state or repair and has the advantage of a junction with the A9 so you avoid Como. If you are driving to Bellagio, I would definitely recommend you do the same. The ferry costs about €12 one way.
Bellagio and Como are very expensive. A coke will cost you €3 and a hotdog €6. A meal for two with wine will cost €50-60 for two courses. The budget options are a hotdog from the vendor near the car ferry or a pizza from one of the restaurants. We passed a supermarket on the drive home but couldn’t find one in Bellagio or Como so if you want to stock up on soft drinks or water without paying silly prices, find a supermarket before you get to the area.
We found a lovely restaurant called Bilacus. It has a roof terrace under a pergola covered with vines and climbing plants. The food is excellent, the staff are friendly and the terrace is like a garden. It’s a cool oasis during the day and a perfect spot for a romantic dinner. To find it, walk past the car ferry towards the passenger ferry piers. The road passes under a building next to the hotel Metropole. Turn right up a little cobbled alley. The restaurant is on the right near the top of the alley.
Sometimes, tourist information photos can be selective – they show the pretty contryside but leave out the factories and building sites. That is not the case here. Although we only explored the Como-Bellagio leg, what we saw was totally beautiful. Bellagio itself is lovely. It’s a small town that probably hasn’t changed that much in the last fifty years. Leading off the lakefront promenade are little cobbled alleys that lead uphill and are lined with interesting shops and little restaurants. Look up and you will often see apartment balconies with window boxes full of brightly coloured flowers. It also suggests a town that has lost some of it’s glamour – the lido is closed and derelict and there is a very large hotel that must have been very grand in it’s heyday but is now falling apart, which suggests that Bellagio was once able to attract more visitors then it is now. That’s not to say that it doesn’t get busy, it does, especially on Sunday, but these days, the visitors are probably day-trippers rather than tourists holidaying in Bellagio.
All things considered, we enjoyed the hotel and Bellagio and would recommend both.

We stayed at Hotel Silvio recently and can't recommend it highly enough. The receptionist - Samatha - was very helpful and friendly, once even giving us a lift into town for dinner on her way home!

The Hotel has a family run restaurant which we didn't eat in because we preferred to explore but it seems that the restaurant is a greater focus for the owners than the hotel. It is certainly very, very popular with locals and tourists alike. However, this doesn't meant that the hotel is neglected. Compared to the price of other hotels in Bellagio, the Hotel Silvio is very reasonable, quite possibly due to it's very sligtly out of town location. I notice that other reviewers have commented on the potentially dangerous walk along the road out of Bellagio and this is true. The hotel is aroudn 10-15 minutes walk from the harbour along a road with no footpath. However, there are no footpaths in the whole of Bellagio and so this isn't unusual. With a little road sense it isn't too worrying until night time when you're less visible and taxis are exceptionally rare.

The rooms were small-ish but perfectly comfortable and much less frilly and 1980s than others I've stayed in in Italy. The balcony is gorgeous and perfect for looking out over the lake. The shower is lovely and bathroom perfectly functional. There are no ironing/laundry services and we were simply pointed towards a launderette in the town centre when we asked but I suppose this is a small gripe!

The breakfast is plentiful and typical for this price bracket but I was suprised to be served instant coffee in Italy!

We arrived in Bellagio and called the hotel which we read about in our Rough Guide to Italy. They were able to offer us 2 adjoining double rooms at a reasonable price. Very comfortable, spacious and clean rooms for a 2 star hotel. Good breakfast included in price. We also ate dinner there - great seafood restaurant. Apparently the family catch fish in the lake daily. The fish we ordered were delicious and all meals great value. I would highly recommend this hotel - it also has free parking where as in the town centre i think you have to pay for parking. Short walk to town centre however the only problem is you have to walk on the road and there is no footpath. We were able to walk through Villa Melzi which is beautiful park grounds near the hotel - however this is not open early or late in the day, therefore it is best to drive into town if you want to avoid walking on the road.

  • Liked — Comfortable rooms and great restaurant
  • Disliked — Difficutl to walk into town as no footpath - lots of cars on the road
