Our stay at the B&B Alba was simply a dream. Alfonso is an artist which can be seen in the beautiful and individually designed rooms. He prepared us a wonderful aranged breakfast and his wife Pierangela gave us helpful information about the city.
We would always come back to this place and can recommend it to everybody.

Arriving by car and having driven through winding cobbled streets, we were feeling quite good as we arrived. Walking through the door into the courtyard we were hit by an amazing smell of jasmine, a feature of Bergamo it seems.

Alfonso's son Andrea sorted us out and showed us to our room (Leonardo). The three rooms are all artistically monikered (or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle if you're that way inclined) but, and I cannot stress this enough, the room you want is Donatello. Why? Because this room overlooks the courtyard and is the only one you'll probably get a good night's sleep in! The other two rooms overlook Via Gombito which appears to be the noisiest place on Earth between 6pm and 3am. Honestly, at times the people might as well have been in the room with us for the amount of noise. Seriously, the noise is a major issue at night and it's not the fault of the B&B - it's just where it is.

The rooms are all extremely spacious and very nice, in that high ceilinged Italian way. Breakfast, which is at the table and shared with the other guests, is a delight and is probably one of the best continental breakfasts I've ever had. Each day slightly different and all good stuff. Normally I find European breakfasts an endurance but this was a genuine pleasure.

Alfonso doesn't speak a word of English but he'll cheerfully ramble on in Italian to you, especially if you speak a few words. A charming, genial host for a lovely B&B.

Great place to stay if you get the Donatello room, otherwise a lovely place somewhat spoilt by the noise.

But then, you don't really go to Italy to sleep do you...

In the heart of Citta Alta is a quiet and supercozy place called Alba Chiara with absolutely unique of ambience, with nostalgic tinge of past times, with great hospitality and perfect kindness. It´s seems that time is stopped in a sweet somnolence, only strikes of a bell counts time every half hour, songs of warblers, cooing of doves gladden a heart in the evening and makes feel wonderful delight in the mornings, a multitude of flowers, trees and other plants makes you fell like in paradise. It´s absolutely great place to escape from an anxiety, bustle and squash. If you want to know what mean Italian hospitality, sympathy and sincerity - you must visit B&B Alba Chiara. Excellent atmosphere, excellent service and ideal situation vouches for your high spirits.
A very special gratitude for Alfonso, Pierangela, Lidiya - they all create the mood of cosiness, sincere affection and great hospitality. They makes us feel like at home and was absolutely complaisant in all questions. Unconditionally - 100 points from 100 ! Especially recommend for contemplators of the charms of live and aesthetes.
It's absolutely great place to return.

B&B alba Chiara is wonderfully located in the old (higher) town of Bergamo. Pre-stay service was wonderful and Pierangela was so helpful with restaurant reservations, suggestions for pickup, etc.

We used tripadvisor to choose this B&B and most of the comments were spot-on. No need repeating here. Pierangela managed to get us a parking permit to park in the square outside the Natural History museum, which was fantastic.
However, two points that may be helpful for future bookers to this B&B:
1) Rooms Michaelangelo and Rafaello are very noisy in the evenings. Noise from restaurants and bars does not die down till after 1am. However, that also attests to the fantastic location of the B&B, really everything is walking distance!
2) The room Rafaello is the "lounge" described by some other posters. We got this room and our bed was a fold-out sofa bed. So while we had a great time and really appreciated the hospitality, location and service, we felt that the fact we were getting a sofabed rather than a real bed as seen in the website should have been mentioned at time of booking

Around the corner (literally two doors down) is an excellent restaurant Vineria Cozzi with charming staff and imaginative food beautifully executed.
For travellers with children, Park Suardi in the lower town will delight the little ones with wonderful traditional playground and a few old-fashioned funfair rides (dodgem cars, mini train). A great place to let the children be children if you've already been carting them to too many museums and churches.

We were impressed with the spacious and well appointed bedrooms, with superb plumbing, and comfortable bed, painted ceilings and marble floor, and SO clean. Breakfast was a joy, continental style, with a good variety of food to suit anyone, and all so fresh. Good coffee too! The proprietor was very hospitable and helpful, and even taxied us to and from the airport. The location is brilliant, being in the centre of town, and handy for literally everything in the Citta Alta. We all had a very enjoyable stay there, and would highly recommend it.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Alba and at Ca Rossa which are owned by the same family. I would highly recommend Ca Rossa (see my review) but here I focus on B&B Alba. I have nothing negative to say about this place, it is absolutely charming!
Here are some of the main points about this property:

1. It is just steps away from the main area for restaurants, shops and sightseeing in the old town (there are no cars allowed except if you have a permit so don't expect traffic noise to be a problem at all).
2. I have never stayed in a place with as much character as this. Our bedroom had a beautiful painting on the ceiling and the whole place was just so characteristic of what I picture in my head to be a traditional Italian home.
3. It is extremely clean and comfortable.
4. Pierangela and Alfonso are extremely friendly and helpful. Pierangela is full of really useful advice about where to go and they can help you out with transfers too. We took a transfer from the airport and also to the train station to get a train to Milan (the train fare was 7 Euros each for a return and trains run every half an hour or so).

Further advice:
There are some lovely restaurants in Bergamo old town so you will be spoilt for choice. We visited in March and it did not feel like a tourist trap at all. You definately feel like one of the locals. Pierangela will be able to advise you about how to get to Lake Como on public transport. We never went this time but she recommended this trip for our return journey. If you want a central room in Bergamo do not look any further than this. The Alba gets 10 out of 10 in my opinion.
