Spent 3 days at the Hotel and the owner Tiziana, her daughter Kim and the staff were simply wonderful. The rooms are well maintained, decorated beautifully with Tiziana's art and the bathrooms are luxurious. I will return soon.

While looking for a place to stay in the old city of Bergamo, i serendipitously ran into this hotel. The location is undoubtedly fabulous. Nestled right in the heart of the old city. The price was perhaps a bit on the high side. The staff were courteous but not overly. The hotel was empty (middle of the winter) but somehow the staff were too busy with other chores. At one point sat in the living area by the lobby and they asked me to move to a different area as they wanted to watch TV (political commentary program...)

The breakfast was quite minimalistic. For a pricey hotel in the middle of a classy old city I would expect more.

When you first walk up the rough old stone staircase from the street, to the tiny reception area, you wonder what you are letting yourself in for. However, this tucked-away little gem in the centre of Bergamo's Old Town on the hill is something of a revelation.

Staff were friendly, polite and anxious to be of service. Breakfast was limited, but adequate and fairly typical for Italy. Our room was old-fashioned, but large, with a spacious, modern bathroom and plenty of towels. Surprisingly, for such an old building, the air conditioning was quiet and efficient and the triple glazing kept out most of the noise from the busy street below. This is a very atmospheric place to stay, right at the heart of the sights.

Drivers should however take note that vehicle access is difficult and there is limited parking available. You can park in the Mercato di Fieno if you can find a space, but you must then obtain a permit from the hotel to display on your windscreen.

Overall piazza were Unhelpful, controlling and our bathroom smelt of sewage. A smile would go along way. We were told that parking was free, however, were charged at the end of our stay. The owner saw me struggling with two big suit cases and didn't think to offer any help with one of them, overall not a nice atmosphere. One positive is the location, which is perfect for visiting local restaurants and bars, which are brill.

First of all we are sorry about the smell but in August we made the cleaning of sewers and for that day in the afternoon there was a bad smell everywhere (the outside temperature of 38C° didn't help!) . About the parking, we always provide a FREE pass for FREE parking to park in the parking place usually reserved to resident people. If this guest was charged for the parking it means that he parked in a public parking and not where our guests are allowed to park. Nobay ask him for money into the hotel.

Very nice hotel, but very expensive. Rooms in the top floor are very nice. The rooms at the back of the hotel have the best views. The ones at the front just face onto the street.
Bathroom and shower are top class.
Didn't bother with their breakfast, went to the Funicular Station Caffe. Much nicer view.
Lastly the WiFi is only available downstairs which they shut at 11.30pm

Just got back from a three day break in 'La Citta Alta Bergamo' and could not wait to review the hotel. The rooms are amazing, clean, air conditioned and with a very large en suite.. what more can you ask for?! The bed was very comfortable and I must admit it was hard to drag myself out of it :-)
The whole feel of the hotel was a lovely experience, tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean everywhere.
The breakfast from 07:30 - 10:00 served in the breakfast room; with a selection of cold meats, cheese and pastries.. as well as cereal, yoghurts and fruit on offer to wake up your taste buds and all washed down with fruit juice and an espresso, was of a very good quality
All the staff are very friendly and bend over backwards to make you feel welcome, as mentioned previously reviews their English is very limited but as we can get by in Italian this wasn't a problem and even if we couldn't this would not have had a negative impact on the service obtained.
Also as gay couple there wasn't any problems encountered and we didn't have to ask for the martimoniale room it was supplied with no questions asked. I would recommend this to gay/straight/old/young alike it is a real gem!

In the town itself there are a number of great restaurants and cafe/bars to eat, drink and be merry. You must take the funicolare up to San Vigilio and eat in one of the two restaurants up there, both with fanstaic views and both reasonably priced.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Firstly, I cannot say enough about the Bergamo location - a beautiful old town with wonderful restaurants and bars; and, a great location from which to tour the northern lakes.

And the Hotel Piazza Vecchia ticks many of the boxes as a place to stay in Bergamo's Citta Alta:

- Perfect location in the old town, close to the main square
- good size, airy rooms, some with views/glimpses
- Relatively quiet - if you are not on the main street side
- Good bathroom

And the downsides:

- Like many others, we got lost trying to find the hotel in the old town. Partly our fault, but some better directions would be handy on the booking. A word of advice, don't plug address into your GPS - it can't cope with the old town position.

- No fridges in the "lesser" rooms (which we had). A little disappointing after buying some great cheeses, salumi and white wine to find this out when we we checked in. We were told that the more expensive rooms did, in fact, have fridges with mini bar. When we asked about this discrepancy, we were told that they used to have fridges in all rooms, but found that that those paying for the cheap rooms tended to to abscond without paying for mini bar usage. Curious response - surely they could just charge to the credit card if this was the case.

- As some others have mentioned service was patchy and sometimes unfriendly. There was a very friendly younger lady, but the older staff tended to be gruff and less helpful. Especially amusing was the older waiter who was a cross between Manuel from Fawlty Towers and Gomez Adams from the Adams Family - but less welcoming than either.

- A very average breakfast

All in all Hotel Piazza Vecchia probably doesn't quite provide the best value for what you pay - though there are very few other viable options for good accommodation in the Alta Citta, which probably explians the cost

So if you keep your expectations in check and just want a great position in the old town, then it's not a bad option - just not great.
