Very nice hotel, but very expensive. Rooms in the top floor are very nice. The rooms at the back of the hotel have the best views. The ones at the front just face onto the street.
Bathroom and shower are top class.
Didn't bother with their breakfast, went to the Funicular Station Caffe. Much nicer view.
Lastly the WiFi is only available downstairs which they shut at 11.30pm

Just got back from a three day break in 'La Citta Alta Bergamo' and could not wait to review the hotel. The rooms are amazing, clean, air conditioned and with a very large en suite.. what more can you ask for?! The bed was very comfortable and I must admit it was hard to drag myself out of it :-)
The whole feel of the hotel was a lovely experience, tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean everywhere.
The breakfast from 07:30 - 10:00 served in the breakfast room; with a selection of cold meats, cheese and pastries.. as well as cereal, yoghurts and fruit on offer to wake up your taste buds and all washed down with fruit juice and an espresso, was of a very good quality
All the staff are very friendly and bend over backwards to make you feel welcome, as mentioned previously reviews their English is very limited but as we can get by in Italian this wasn't a problem and even if we couldn't this would not have had a negative impact on the service obtained.
Also as gay couple there wasn't any problems encountered and we didn't have to ask for the martimoniale room it was supplied with no questions asked. I would recommend this to gay/straight/old/young alike it is a real gem!

In the town itself there are a number of great restaurants and cafe/bars to eat, drink and be merry. You must take the funicolare up to San Vigilio and eat in one of the two restaurants up there, both with fanstaic views and both reasonably priced.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Firstly, I cannot say enough about the Bergamo location - a beautiful old town with wonderful restaurants and bars; and, a great location from which to tour the northern lakes.

And the Hotel Piazza Vecchia ticks many of the boxes as a place to stay in Bergamo's Citta Alta:

- Perfect location in the old town, close to the main square
- good size, airy rooms, some with views/glimpses
- Relatively quiet - if you are not on the main street side
- Good bathroom

And the downsides:

- Like many others, we got lost trying to find the hotel in the old town. Partly our fault, but some better directions would be handy on the booking. A word of advice, don't plug address into your GPS - it can't cope with the old town position.

- No fridges in the "lesser" rooms (which we had). A little disappointing after buying some great cheeses, salumi and white wine to find this out when we we checked in. We were told that the more expensive rooms did, in fact, have fridges with mini bar. When we asked about this discrepancy, we were told that they used to have fridges in all rooms, but found that that those paying for the cheap rooms tended to to abscond without paying for mini bar usage. Curious response - surely they could just charge to the credit card if this was the case.

- As some others have mentioned service was patchy and sometimes unfriendly. There was a very friendly younger lady, but the older staff tended to be gruff and less helpful. Especially amusing was the older waiter who was a cross between Manuel from Fawlty Towers and Gomez Adams from the Adams Family - but less welcoming than either.

- A very average breakfast

All in all Hotel Piazza Vecchia probably doesn't quite provide the best value for what you pay - though there are very few other viable options for good accommodation in the Alta Citta, which probably explians the cost

So if you keep your expectations in check and just want a great position in the old town, then it's not a bad option - just not great.

The hotel is very central and has a nice decoration. I espacially liked the atmosphere of the rooms. Best thing was the bathroom. They had huge and very nice bathroom. For the ladies, the had even a make-up table in the bathroom. The breakfast is more international than original italien. It was with cheese and ham. There was of course italian breakfast included with bread, croissant and jam. People on the reseption speaking several languages, like: englisch, french and italian. But everyone speak one language. So you have to have a luck to have to one, who speaks your language. But all of them are nice.

Four of us stayed here over the Bank Holiday weekend and had a lovely time. The staff could not have been nicer - Ok their english is rather limited but you ARE in Italy. The location is excellent in the Citta Alta - Catch a number 1 bus from the airport - 2 euros each - takes about 1/2 hour, get the ticket in the arrival hall and punch it when getting on the bus. Hotel is 5 minutes walk down the main street just before the main square (Piazza Vecchia)
Very nice continental breakfast - cold meats, cheese, yoghurts, croissants, fruit plus fruit juice and cornflakes if required.
Rooms quiet with excellent comfortable bed. The bells don't ring all night - they stop at 10 and don't start till 7 a.m
We caught the bus to Lovere on Lake Iseo which was beautiful and only about 1 hour ride - catch the number 1 to the train station then walk over to the bus station - tickets about 8 euro pp return.
It is worth getting the funicular up from the old town for fantastic views from the castle and superb pizza at the restaurant which is 2 minutes from the top funicular station - turn left when coming out of station. There are also spectacular views from the Rocco fortress near the top of the funicular from the lower town and the bar actually at the top of the lower funicular station is a great place for a sunset drink looking out over the plains.
We ate twice at Il Sole just down from the hotel which was fantastic food and very reasonable - simple fresh food and large portions. House wine at 8 euro for a 1 litre carafe was very drinkable!
Tourist office is 5 minutes down the main street and there is a good bar just down the road opposite the office.
Bergamo is a great place for a weekend break with plenty to see and do, good food, beautiful scenery, nice people and easy access from the airport

Room Tip: Room 5 has a nice view to the mountains and very comfortable kingsize bed plus minibar/fridge
