The Citta Alta of Bergamo is just wonderful. It feels very Italian of the old sort. With narrow streets, several beautiful churches, delightful squares and innumerable places to eat or just watch the world go by. In September, they also had, as they have for the past few years although it may become biannual due to cost, a Green Square event. This comprises all the squares and many other open areas being turned into beautiful green spaces. It is all done with potted plants but the result is a green City, with open squares, with the odd marble fountain, being transformed into a garden with paths between the areas of planting. Truly delightful.

Great area to wander around and explore the cobbled back streets. The daylight on the buildings is always changing and makes for beautiful photographs. The only downside during our time there was the numerous groups of decrepit elderly tourists blocking the narrow streets and having no clue that there were other people wanting to walk about and enjoy the area.

The oldvtown is high compared to most of today's city and that provides a nice view of the surroundings. I would sugest a walk during the evening and sundown. A lot of food shops and restaurants for wine, cheese, salame and ice cream lovers. On the other hand there are many churches beautifully decorated if you into art. Overall it is woth the trip uphill...

From the train just catch bus 1 and you can use your ticket for the funicular up; or continue to end of the line where you can use same bus ticket to take 2nd funicular to the castle (which is in ruins; but free).
If you are quick; 90 minutes or less from train, that same ticket will take you back; where all the sights are in La Citta Alta.

If that info is not worth a like! Nothing is!

After going up on the funicular railway a great place to explore on foot, lots of little streets with great architecture and views. Artisan shops and lots of places to eat. Fantastico!
