What a beautiful place to visit. Like walking into a living medieval town on top of the world with views of the alps. Yes very special place and if my suitcase had been bigger I would have come home with one of the beautiful paintings sold by the artist's in the square outside the natural history museum which by the way has free entry for the winter. Prices for coffee reflected the tourist status and were high. We ate there once but felt a bit let down, not as good as restaurants in town.

The old city of Bergamo, reached best by Funicular if you are staying in the main city, is a wonderful place. It is full of amazing buildings and history yet a very vibrant place with a full community. It is not just a tourist destination. I would highly recommend staying in the old city and enjoying all of its charms, from the main piazzas to the myriad of wonderful restaurants and both classic and modern shops to the many parks and small alleyways! It was wonderful to explore. We went back to the main piazza - Piazza Vecchia -many times during the day to marvel at the structures in the changing light. Off the beaten path and a truly Italian experience!

If one chose to live here acquiring a piece of real estate would run to five to twelve thousand Euro per square metre and rising, but one has to only look around to see why. The streets, buildings, squares, churches are charming in a way that only these hilltop cities of Italy can be.For our part to simply be able to eat at any number of superb restaurants, or to prop on the square and watch people passing by while taking in a cool wine, is sheer bliss.
