Hotel Relais San Lorenzo
Ranked #2 of 34 Hotels in Bergamo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 30, 2014

Just back from a wonderful 4 day stay at Relais San Lorenzo. Newly refurbished last Spring and opened last June, rooms are lovely with very comfortable beds, luxury linens, Molton Brown toiletries, Espresso machines. The facilities in the hotel are excellent (Turkish bath, sauna, relaxing rooms, beautiful terraces) and the staff are welcoming, helpful and friendly. The restaurant and breakfast area really have the wow factor. It seems that the builders, during the renovation, were digging underneath to build a car park and serendipitously found an archaeological site, which is now part of the restaurant - and it is amazing to see!
San Lorenzo has the best location in Bergamo, in Citta Alta with views of the hills and valleys, a short walk from the best restaurants, the best walks and the funicolare to San Vigilio. We can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Best rooms have a view of the hills

Hotel facilities and staff second to none. The restaurant environment was unique and a must for any visitor. A gem hidden in the beautiful city of Bergamo. Staff facilitated every request , spar was fantastic. Strongly recommend lunch on the terrace with a chilled vino and a john keats poem.

This is probably one if the best European hotels I have stayed in. Thanks to Trip Advisor for making the decision for me. The rooms are very funky and modern. No expense has been spared and the attention to detail is second to none. If you need to stay in the area of Bergamo you must stay here!

This hotel is located in the upper village of Bergamo, about a five minute walk from the tram system that takes you to the lower village. As such the location makes it an excellent place to explore the upper village, while giving you the option of getting down to the lower village conveniently.

Judging by my stay, the hotel is either brand new, or newly renovated, and my room, the lobby, restaurant etc. were all newly designed and built. The entire deco is a clean modern design. My room, located on the second floor, was not very big, but was spotless. I would have preferred a room with windows facing the outside but instead I received one facing the hotel's courtyard. At least it was very quiet.

The restaurant in the basement is built into some kind of historical excavation site, and as such you can see the ancient remains of the former building's foundation. Very interesting to say the least.

Where the hotel really excelled is on the day of my departure, the staff went above and beyond what normal hotel staff would do, to make sure I didn't miss my flight. I won't go into heavy details, but let me just say that the one member of the staff was absolutely incredible in what she did, in order for me to get to my flight on time. I've never experienced that before. As such, I give this hotel a full rating for going far beyond what was expected and making sure everything worked out for me.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is facing the exterior, not the inner courtyard.

Just stayed at the hotel relais San Lorenzo. Totally refurbished and re opened in July 2013. The trip advisor pictures as of today's date (September 1 st) bear no resemblance to the hotel as it now is.

The refurbishment has created a uber modern smart boutique hotel, part of the luxury small hotels of the world. The rooms and facilities are modern clean and spacious. The restaurant and bar downstairs overlook and have integrated within ancient foundations that allegedly go back to roman times.

Location is outstanding just below the San Viglo furnicular railway and with its own garage very easy to find and drive a car or taxi to.

Staff are very helpful.

It's not without faults for a genuine 5 star hotel it lacks "panache" and the inclusion of sauna and Turkish spa, but no treatments or massage seems a bit odd. The bar area is very swish, but when we were there totally empty. We asked them for an off menu cocktail - a piña colada, very helpfully they made one and then confessed its the first time they had served one in the bar and hadn't been sure how to make it.

It also seemed virtually unoccupied which meant it lacked atmosphere

Think this summed up the staff, really helpful but a bit unsure.

Reception booking in took 15 minutes even though we were virtually the only people in the hotel

Suspect we will come back in a year and it will be the best hotel in bergamo or have gone pop.

Given it five stars its not quite that but could be

Having just returned from a short trip to Italy for a christening we stopped at Hotel San Lorenzo which seemed very central in the old city Alta and right in the old walls . The hotel brilliantly mixed the very old remains found on site with the modernity of an up to the minute hotel . The room was lovely with very comfortable beds and all mod cons and free mini bar as well as a view of the old square .
The customer service here was brilliant with everyone going above and beyond and all extremely friendly , we also used the spa which had a very nice sauna and relaxation area but was a little limited and could have done with a hot tub or pool which was missing . The breakfast was very good with a large variety in the restaurant which incorporates the ancient city walls and is very unique . Definitely a real find in Bergamo very good !
