Arrival and Location:
This lovely B&B is located on a hill somewhat outside Bergamo. Coming from the East, our satnav guided us to a little road with lots and repeated sings that it wasn't open for traffic. Considering ourselves “residents” we bravely ignored those signs, and the road took us uphill – whilst getting narrower and narrower to the point that oncoming traffic would have been a real problem. The hotel is then easily missed from that direction, as you won't see the gate and the small sign. So if you are coming up the Via Castagneta, look out for a 90° left bend with some cars parking and a bus stop in the corner, then look back, and you'll see the gate.
The place is probably 2km away from the entrance to the historical Citta Alta. You can either walk or rent one of their bikes – which might be somewhat dangerous on that narrow road with bidirectional (Italian!) traffic – or use the hotel owners' very reliable free shuttle service – a 9 seater minivan, and they make the trip to the Citta Alta and back at 10:30 – 15:30 – 17:00 – 19:00 and 22:00. For us that was good enough, but you can get additional rides for € 5.
The owners also provide a parking permit for some area outside the Citta Alta, but finding a slot might still be a problem.

Check in:
Extremely friendly and welcoming. Everything was explained very well on arrival.

Parking:
The hotel provides free outdoor parking on their premises.

The room:
We had booked the “suite” for three nights, with a small bedroom, a lobby / “living area” with a sofa and a coffee table, a reasonably sized bathroom with bathtub, basin, WC and bidet and a large 20 m² terrace with no special views, but the green hills and the scattered houses plus further down some views of the Citta Bassa provided a very relaxing atmosphere.
The bed is a bit on the small (short) side, and tall people will have their feet hanging over.
The curtains do not block the daylight.
The room included a fridge/minibar, a small safe deposit box – not large enough for tablet computers or DSLRs, but ok for passports, purses, phones, smaller cameras – and a somewhat old, but functioning aircon system.
There is free Wifi everywhere, signal strength and reliability were ok most of the time.

The Bathroom:
Is spacious and bright, with a bathtub only. The bathtub is not screened, so taking a shower is a bit messy, alternatively you have to do it sitting or squatting. The bathroom floor is some 10 cm lower than the living room floor, and that results in quite a trip hazard.

Breakfast:
Not included in room rate and available for € 7 per day and person. It is served – at least during the warm season – on the terrace next to the entrance. The buffet is simple and choices, in particular bread, somewhat limited. Some additional items like eggs, cappuccino etc. can be provided at no charge on request. As the breakfast is not included, we suggest to give it a go on the first morning, and then see whether you are satisfied with what's offered, or otherwise have breakfast in town after that. Alternatively you could also buy some own additional items of your liking, store them in the fridge and bring them to the table.

Summary:
This is a small family run B&B with extremely dedicated and friendly owners. Just their warm hospitality makes it worthwhile to stay there. Add the relaxing atmosphere a bit out of town and the great and reliable free shuttle service, and you'll understand why almost everybody loves it and would return – us included!
Suggestions for improvement: a larger bed, shower screens around the bathtub, and getting rid of that trip hazard – or at least making it more obvious.

Room Tip: I would recommend the suite with the large terrace.

Great hotel for a visit in Bergamo. Fine rooms and nice breakfast. We stayed 2 nights which was fine for seeing the beautiful old city. The hotel had shuttle bus to the city several times a day/night.

Many thanks to Mario and Graziella for our recent stay at La Valletta.

Every single prevoius review written about the friendliness and generosity of the owners is absolutely true and this genuinely made the stay ever so memorable for us.

The hotel itself is just beautiful, and my mother could not believe that we were staying there as we pulled up to the hotel. It was interesting to learn that this hotel was Mario's childhood home and he converted it in to the beatiful lodging it is today.

Mario very kindly offers free lifts to and from the old town - this is needed as Bergamo doesn't appear to have heard of taxis yet!!! He also gave us a lift to the airport for 20 euros - definitely take him up on this offer as you will no doubt be charged more in a taxi (if you can find one!)

We had the "blue room" - a simple, well decorated room with spacious bathroom and more importantly , air conditioning!!! The mini bar has a variety of offerings at unbelievably cheap prices.

Breakfast is fresh and plentiful, with Mario even cooking you your own individual portion of his "eggs and bacon"!

We slept so well at the Valetta with perfectly chilled rooms, comfortable beds and no outside noise - as you really are in the foothills of the alps!

Thank you once again Mario and Graziella, we will be back!

My husbands' family is from Bergamo so we were quite excited to see the town. The moment you begin the drive up to Citta Alta at Bergamo, you're in a wonderland. What a beautiful town! This B&B is well run, has incredible views, large rooms and huge bathrooms, great service, yummy breakfasts, very helpful hosts and a patio for relaxing that overlooks the town below. We were encouraged to eat in Citta Alta by our hosts and this was our favorite meal as a family! Great walk up to Citta from the B&B and the location was just as nice going into Bergamo. The hosts offered trips via van to wherever we needed to go and were so helpful with our bags and choosing destinations nearby.

This has to be the best hotel from which to visit the Citta Alta at Bergamo, which is the must see part of the city. The hotel is located at the same level as the Citta Alta, and runs a shuttle service for guests. The rooms are clean and well appointed, with good air conditioning, and breakfast is taken on the terrace. The owners are very helpful in every way. Book early to get a room with a view.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the valley, opposite side of the hotel from the road, though the latter i...

My Girlfriend and I visited Bergamo for a long weekend in early June. La Valletta Relais is situated on a peaceful hillside, a very pleasant 20 minute walk from centre of the old town. There are a few restaurants nearby which the hotel owners recommended and we really did have some wonderful meals out.

The owners of the hotel are a lovely couple and really can't do enough for their guests, including regular shuttle runs to the old town (though as said the walk is really very pleasant).

We stayed in a suite, which had all the facilities you would expect as well as a large private patio with beautiful views over the hillside and town.

Breakfast at the hotel was continental, but the chef made up omelettes to order which were very tasty.

The Old Town of Bergamo is classic Italy, with narrow streets and beautiful architecture. We took a train from the new town to Lake Como for a day, which was really worth doing,. The whole weekend was very relaxing and the hotel and owners really contributed to our enjoyment.
