We ate here twice during our stay in Bergamo and that tells all about what we think about the food and the service. All excellent and highly recommended. Great food, wine and not to expensive.

After the funicular (adult return fare: Euros 3.50) has whisked you up from the Citta Bassa to thy Citta Alta, affording fabulous views with the promise of yet more, and you've wandered up the cobblestoned streets, admired the stunning Baroque splendour of the Duomo (but be sure to get there before they close for lunch at 1230: yes, it IS Italy after all) and wondering where to eat, da Franco welcomes you with its al resco and indoor eating, the ancient brick arches in the inside dining room, the whitewashed walls inducing calm and cool on a hot summer's day, and genuinely welcoming staff. We were fortunate to have had Valerio attend us, with his intimate knowledge of the mainly Milanese/Piedmontese cuisine and wines [his Pinot Grigio recommendation was spot on] and his completely professional approach. The menu options are both extensive and reasonable, including pizzas and fish, a wide range of meat dishes [our Veal Milanese was the best we've had in Italy, and cost a modest 13.50 Euros, with more French fries than we could eat] and calorie-busting desserts and gelati. It is located on the main "street" of the upper city, but recessed from it in a mini-piazza. It doersn,t have the drop-dead gorgeous views that some of the other restaurants in the Citta Alta boast, but if you're seriously in to Italian food you really can't beat da Franco for value.

Everything about this restaurant is great: food, which is absolutely delicious; cozy atmosphere; and a friendly and courteous service. We will miss this place!

Atmospheric, traditional Italian restaurant with friendly, attentive waiters.
Wide-ranging, reasonably-priced menu and perfectly drinkable wine -again, not overly-priced.
€9 for a litre carafe of white sparkling represents good value compared to Milan, UK prices!
Great service and hearty portions, all delivered in an unhurried manner.

Would recommend the veal chop Milanese style -delicious.

One of the many typical restaurants that you will find on the Bergamo hill. As we only visited this one, it is difficult to compare them, but at least for its looks this is one of the more attractive ones. Particularly when you can sit outside on the terrace. The food was good, but not exceptional. The service was very friendly, which is not always the case in places like this. Prices are reasonable, so definitely worth considering when you are psending some time in the old city of Bergamo.
