“A beautiful place”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

Traveled by car from the centre of Milan. The journey took just under an hour and the tolls cost about 4 euros in total. Even though the weather was a bit cloudy, it didn't detract from a worthy visit. The town is tucked away within medieval walls and the narrow streets lead you to a huge cathedral in a central square. Further down you come across the lake and the beautiful mountains that surround it. Lots of restaurants, all good value. Recommend the gelataria opposite the boat trip booking office!!.

“Crisp snow capped mountains frame the glittering lake”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

We went on a cheapy group holiday to the area and loved it here. Fabulous food, gorgeous nature. Easy to meander around the little towns which rest on the shores of the lake. Bus service between towns and lots of fantastic walks.

“Without the lake it would be a huge disappointment”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

The city itself is disappointing, worn down, bordering on shabby, lots of graffiti everywhere. Very small downtown contained withing the medieval walls that are not sufficiently emphasized. Outside the walled area it's pretty ugly. But, there is the lake. The view is spectacular. Just take the funicolare (cable car) to Brunate and walk around the small town looking down to the lake. Other alternative, take a boat (vaporetto) and go to Bellagio. It's public transportation, not tourist rides, so it stops at every little port town. Torno (right bank) has a small piazza with a cheap bar that serves sandwiches. You don't need anything else. Here take the ferry across to Tremezzo and then another slow boat or the fast hydrofoil back to Como. One of my favorite little towns is Sala Comacina, in front of the only island (it only has a restaurant). Sala has small narrow port-like wandering paths near the marina.

One of the most beautfiul Italian Lakes, the best way to see the little towns and villas is by boat. But it is quite expensive if you are venturing, for instance, from Como to Tremezzo or Bellagio, and to return by boat. So you could come back to your base, in our case, Como city, by bus, thus seeing different scenery and saving money at the same time. It is essential to get bus timetables if you are doing this, as they mostly only come every half hour. One of the best villas is VILLA CARLOTTA, where you can go inside and see how they lived in bygone years, and also wander in the beautiful gardens. Wherever you go on Lake Como, there is always the beautiful lake with the ever-changing backdrop of the mountains, according to the time of day.
