“Really pretty”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2013

My husband and I went in May. It was quite dead and not very fun. A lot of places were closed. The towns were super fancy and maybe a little too much for us. The beauty is undeniable but we didn't love our time here. We spent 3 days and got pretty bored.

“Fairytale place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

Lake Como is the place to be... It has everything - crystal clear water, mountain peaks towering above the lake, cozy towns huddled along its shores...

It must be just perfect in summer, but winter time is great too - you can také long walks on the lakeside, enjoy centers in its Christmasy splendor... Or a New Year's party with dance directly on the main piazza (experineced in Lecco)...

And it is just 30 minutes to skiing resorts, such as Piani di Bobbio in case you feel like snow and winter sports.

“UPSCALE”

The best spot in Europe for summer and winter vacations!

Upside: overwhelming landscapes.

Downside: best hotels and restaurants closed in the lower seasons.

“Scenic Beauty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2012

Lake Como is a wonderful getaway from Milan city once you are done with your shopping and just want a place to relax, enjoy and discover local Italian living. You can take the train from Milan train station - purchase your return tickets as well. Once you arrive at Varrena, take the ferry that runs pretty often to Bellagio. The ferry ride itself is just wonderful and you can start taking in the amazing view of the Lake, mountains and the villas. Just amazing and breathtaking. Borgo Le Terreze is a really nice place to stay and have the view that is breathtaking enough that you don't really need to venture far. Even if you did, you won't regret walking around Bellagio. Every corner is something beautiful and fascinating.

“Lake Como, where the rich hide from paparazzi”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2012

Lake Como is a Northern Italy jewel, about 45 minutes drive North of Milan's Airport (or by train). It is easier to get there at end of season, when the traffic is not a factor and the tourists went home. The lake is a huge inverted Y bordering in the north with the Alps and Switzerland. Como is a charming town at the bottom of one of the arms of the Y. Roads are bordering the lake all around and there are properties scattered by the lake shore all around where personalities (such as George Clooney, Sofia Loren, Mastroianni's daughter, Versacci's sister, heads of state, popes, princes and princesses) have built or bought their hiding places or palaces. The best way to view the area is, of course by boat, which you can hire from the Como marina. The main means of transportation for the locals year round is also by boat and many locals do not bother to get a driver's license. If you wish to travel to Bellagio, another beautiful little jewel of a town where the arms of the inverted Y meet, you can take a vaporetto from Como and it will get you there in less than 30 minutes. Even though the lake is at the foothills of the Alps (you can see the snow capped mountains), it has its own micro-climate that is warmer and it rarely gets snow and almost never freezes. That is why the vegetation around the lake is lush and you can see large healthy palm trees at the richer residences. temperatures at the end of November were around 45F during the day and low 40s at night. This is a romantic and definitely bucket list destination to visit. To understand and enjoy the area you will probably need at least 2-3 days, because anything less might not be worth your while.
