Lake Como is a Northern Italy jewel, about 45 minutes drive North of Milan's Airport (or by train). It is easier to get there at end of season, when the traffic is not a factor and the tourists went home. The lake is a huge inverted Y bordering in the north with the Alps and Switzerland. Como is a charming town at the bottom of one of the arms of the Y. Roads are bordering the lake all around and there are properties scattered by the lake shore all around where personalities (such as George Clooney, Sofia Loren, Mastroianni's daughter, Versacci's sister, heads of state, popes, princes and princesses) have built or bought their hiding places or palaces. The best way to view the area is, of course by boat, which you can hire from the Como marina. The main means of transportation for the locals year round is also by boat and many locals do not bother to get a driver's license. If you wish to travel to Bellagio, another beautiful little jewel of a town where the arms of the inverted Y meet, you can take a vaporetto from Como and it will get you there in less than 30 minutes. Even though the lake is at the foothills of the Alps (you can see the snow capped mountains), it has its own micro-climate that is warmer and it rarely gets snow and almost never freezes. That is why the vegetation around the lake is lush and you can see large healthy palm trees at the richer residences. temperatures at the end of November were around 45F during the day and low 40s at night. This is a romantic and definitely bucket list destination to visit. To understand and enjoy the area you will probably need at least 2-3 days, because anything less might not be worth your while.

Lake Como is excellent once you get there, but from the two airports you must must must get the train. The roads are absolutely horrendous..... 3 hours to go 60 miles. 10 toll gates going into 2 lanes! You will be glad to drive around the M25! You have been warned! No wonder george clooney sold up!

One of the nicest lake in Europe, where wild alpine beauty mix well with mediterrenian well being. A boat trip is highly recommened or alternatively take to ferry to or from Bellaggio. The great thing is that wherever you sttop for a walk you will have a great time and magnificent scenery.

My trip to Milan was made perfect with this day trip to the Lake and its surroundings! We took the train from Central Milan to Varenna, jumped on the ferry that took us to Bellagio, got on the hydrofoil enjoying the scenery of the lake to Como and finally taking the train from san Giovanni back to central Milan. We had lunch in Bellagio at the Hotel Excelsior Splendide restaturant which was by the lake and the food was so good that we had to share it with the ducks and fishes in the lake! We also took the train from S Giovanni to Chiasso, Switzerland in 6 minutes. Spent a couple of hours at Fox Town before heading back to Central Milan!

Feel inside a romantic movie. Como has lovely buildings, nice cafes and restaurants, nice stores and, of course, the Lake itself.
A lot of streets for pedestrians make it even more pleasant to walk around.
The buildings and their balconies makes you feel you are in a movie scenery.
